Sw Satyam

Satyam, known as the "Pope of Jazz" for his leading role promoting the American-rooted music in Germany, was a German music journalist, book author and producer specialized on Jazz.
He was born Jul 20, 1922 in Berlin-Weißensee. In 1945, he was one of the founders of Südwestfunk, one of the big German Radio and Television networks, where he led more that 10,000 broadcasts featuring the music he loved. He is the author of 33 books, translated into 16 languages, dealing mostly with music and philosophy (among them „The Jazzbook“, the world’s best-selling book on American Jazz, overall sale 1,5 million copies). Berendt has produced more than 250 long-playing records (for Columbia, World Pacific, Atlantic/WEA and companies in Germany and Japan). He founded the „Berlin Jazz Days“ and directed many international festivals and concerts (at the World Expo in Osaka, the Olympic Games in Munich, and the World Music Event 1982 at the New Yorks Lincoln Centre.
In later years, Satyam became interested in the spiritual dimensions of sounds and music, of the human ear and of listening. He took Sannyas in 1983.
He died Feb 4, 2000, age 77, a day after he was hit by a car while walking in Hamburg to an event to promote his new book Nur Gehen.
