Aan Het boek van zijn ligt zenmeester's Hakuins Lied van Meditatie ten grondslag. Zen zegt: 'Wees gewoon jezelf, je hoeft geen ander doel te bereiken. Leef oplettend en vol vreugde en alles is precies zoals het moet zijn. Het heeft geen zin te denken "hoe iets zou moeten." De waarheid volgt je als een schaduw. Neem gewoon je plaats in, ontspan je en wees spontaan, natuurlijk. Leef niet volgens bepaalde principes, maar laat de regels uit je spontane natuur voortkomen."
