Meditation: The Art of Ecstasy

From The Sannyas Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

A practical handbook in simple and clear language which is ideal for everyone from complete beginners to experienced meditators. The book contains a scientific explanation of meditation, a humorous discussion of obstacles to watch out for, answers to questions from meditators and 60 step-by-step descriptions of meditation techniques. Some techniques have been drawn from ancient traditions such as Zen, Sufi, Tantra, Tao, and the Upanishads, others include the revolutionary techniques created by Osho especially for the modern man who finds it difficult to quieten his mind. There is even a meditation for smokers.

Later published as part of Osho Books on CD-ROM.
Colophon page:
With the exception of chapter 3, chapter 8, and the section on techniques devised by Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, the material in this book originally appeared in Dynamics of Meditation, published by Jeevan Jagriti Kendra (now known as the Rajneesh Foundation). It is published here with their kind permission.
Chapter 3 originally appeared in Sannyas 3 No 1 (January-February 1974), under the title "Modern Man and His Neurosis". It is reprinted here with the kind permission of the publisher, Neo-Sannyas International.
Chapter 8 from a discourse titled "The Occult Mysteries of Initation" that originally appeared in the book I Am the Gate.
Editors (our research):
The material from Dynamics of Meditation is mixed to form completely new chapters, extensively edited, and parts of chapters have been left out. A part of chapter 11 and Appendices 4 & 6 of Dynamics are not found in this book at all.
The colophon's statement "With the exception of chapter 3, chapter 8, and the section on techniques devised by Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, the material in this book originally appeared in Dynamics of Meditation" seems not entirely correct.
See table of contents for more details. Below some specific remarks:
  • The Introduction, "Meditation: The Art of Celebration", is a part of an interview with Dr. Grazia Marchiano, now Ma Veet Sandeh, Neo-Sannyas International President for Europe, in Bombay, India in March 4, 1971.
  • Ch. 3 is the "Text of an interview with Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh by Ma Yoga Bhasha of New York, U.S.A., on January 20, 1973, Bombay, India." It has about half of that interview. This seems the only chapter that is a first publication here.
  • Ch. 8 is from 1971-06-10, I Am the Gate ch.7. It contains parts from that text, it is about half of that, but edited.
  • Ch. 9, the first part is from an unknown source, the rest is an edited version of q.1 of Dynamics of Meditation ~ 05
  • Ch. 19, "Techniques Devised by Bhagwan Shree", is a practical description of Osho's meditation techniques. It is not written or spoken by Osho. See discussion for a list of the meditations. It is not part of the CD-ROM.
Rajneesh Foundation published this book in 1977 under the title Meditation: The Art of Inner Ecstasy. That has the same text and type-page as the 1976 edition of this book.
