Talk:What Is Rebellion?

Neeten's Osho Source Book has this entry in his Bibliography section: "What is Rebellion? Bombay, Jeevan Jagruti Kendra, 1972. One discourse from March 31, 1970. Later retitled 'The Hippie Rebellion'. Exact year of publication is unknown."

Possibly the "exact year of publication is unknown" refers to What Is Rebellion?, but also possibly to a putative edition of "The Hippie Rebellion." Thus the 1972 given for this book may be the case but is far from certain.

The discussion above is not complete about Neeten's Osho Source Book. The OSB says:

List of Lectures and Discourses 1964-1974, Series #, Date & Place
  • What is Rebellion? *H 1 31.03.69 Jabalpur
  • What is Rebellion? W H 1 31.03.1970pm Jabalpur
(Two entries! I assume one with a wrong year. "W" means Wiki. The CD-ROM states 1970, and that was probably the Wiki's source. I will ask Neeten about the source for 1969. )
  • (under 1968) Vidroh Kya Hai (The Hippie Rebellion). 1968/69.
  • (under 1970) Vidroh Kya Hai? 31.03.1970.
Bibliography 1945 – 1974
  • What is Rebellion? Bombay, Jeevan Jagruti Kendra, 1972. One discourse from March 31, 1970. Later retitled ‘The Hippie Rebellion’. Exact year of publication is unknown.
(I assume Neeten has his alt. title information from the CD-ROM.)
Reference 108. The lecture What is Rebellion was later translated by Shree Padam Prakash and edited by Ma Ananda Prem. Translations: Hindi to English. Research Library. Poona, 18.1.1981.
(So that is the source for the translator and editor.)

Where does this title come from anyway, apart from the CD-ROM? I think the original source is to be found in the publication-lists in the back of other books, e.g. I Am the Gate (JJK 1972.09), Thus Spake Mulla Nasrudin (JJK, 1973.01) and Two Hundred Two (JJK 1974.05):

Available English Books : I. Translated from the original Hindi version:
  • What is Rebellion! (sic) Rs 2.00.

In I Am the Gate (RF 1975) there is also such list, repeating most of the titles from the 1972 edition, but not What Is Rebellion?.

The CD-ROM says, in the header above the text of the lecture:

Note: this was later retitled THE HIPPIE REBELLION. It was prepared for publication, but not published.

My interpretation of this note is that it means: "this talk was prepared for publication, but it has not been published, i.e. not under any title". So here I differ from the interpretation in the first paragraph of this discussion.

The Lao Tzu Library Book List does not mention any of the two titles.

The List of Early Books says: "31/3/69 Hindi, Unpublished, only one discourse (in Jabalpur)".

All in all, my conclusion is that this lecture was never published. It was clearly intended to be published around 1972, even had a price-tag, but it never happened.

The List of Early Books has the lecture in 1969, so different from the 1970 of the CD-ROM (and this Wiki), but the same as Neeten's (other?) source. --Sugit (talk) 15:20, 2 June 2016 (UTC)

Maybe a final word on the date: the discussion of discussion of Vidroh Kya Hai? concludes: 31 March 1970.

Osho's Appointment Diary 1967-1970 (translated source document) confirmes a talk in Jabalpur University on 31 Mar 1970 4 pm.--DhyanAntar 05:06, 28 September 2022 (UTC)
