From Bhagwan to Osho: Publications table

The quantity and variety of books Osho has authored are second to none in the world of spiritual literature. Thus, when he changed his name near the end of his time in the body, it threw his publishers for a loop and, especially in his commune, the coping with this change was done hurriedly and chaotically. The tables below are an attempt to track and illustrate how the change was dealt with. There are seven tables, dealing with:

1. New books: first editions of his ongoing talks, starting with those that had been given seven months or less before the name change, that had never been published previously in any form. Some but not all of these books came with explanations of his new name.
2. New editions of older books bearing his new name. As with the first group, some but not all of these books came with explanations of his new name.
3. The cascade of explanations printed in various parts of the new books, plus a parallel cascade of stickers inserted in old, already printed but unsold books with his old name.
4. A similar cascade of explanations in Hindi books, with corresponding stickers in old unsold books with his old name.
5 and 6. News of the name-changes and relevant context in the official newspapers at the time, Rajneesh Times International and Osho Times International.
7. Other sources: Miscellaneous historical publications pointing to stories and events relating to Osho's name change.

The data in the tables were verified from physical copies of the books. One of the authors of this page kept a record when acquiring books, mostly shortly after publication. The dates of publication were also asked from a source in the Publications department at the time. And some dates have been ascertained by ISBN searches.

Explanations and Stickers

This table contains the various offerings purporting to explain Osho's new name, in text and image form. The "code" is the wiki's tag connecting with references in the tables above relating to various books. Quite apart from these explanations printed in one place or another in the new books, a parallel program of stickering was carried on to offer similar explanations in old unsold books with Osho's name as Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh. Note that the stickers serve different functions and are not always the same as explanations printed right in the new books that do not have his old name. Stickers have been placed where they fit best here, though they may not replicate the "explanation's" text exactly.

Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh is now known simply as Osho.
Osho has explained that His name is derived from William James' word 'oceanic' which means dissolving into the ocean. Oceanic describes the experience, He says, but what about the experiencer?
For that we us the word 'Osho'.
Later, He came to find out that 'Osho' has also been used historically in the Far East, meaning "The Blessed One, on Whom the Sky Showers Flowers."

Hindi Publications

This table contains various offerings purporting to explain Osho's new name in Hindi publications, in text and image form. In most respects it is very similar in its principles to the table above. Examples are not numerous but the text so far seems to conform fairly closely to translations of the "types" above, even including a few choice English words transliterated into Devanagari. Notes below the Hindi text outline which of the English types they most closely resemble.

As above, the "code" is the wiki's tag classifying the various types. Besides the explanations printed in new books, a parallel program of stickering was carried on to offer similar explanations in old unsold books retaining Osho's name as Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh.

Text is a fairly faithful translation of the A2 text above. One word (underlined) was not able to be completely replicated according to the typographical standards of the example book, Mera Swarnim Bharat (मेरा स्वर्णिम भारत), published in Apr of 1989. Remarkably, this was two months before the first books explaining Osho's name change in English.

Text is a fairly faithful translation of the B text above signed by Ma Prem Hasya. One word (underlined) was not able to be completely replicated according to the typographical standards of the example book, Sadhana Path (साधना पथ), published in June of 1989. Not only is the text of the explanation a close translation of B above, its similarity extends to being signed ex officio, in this case by Ma Yoga Neelam, "Osho Rajneesh's personal secretary" instead of Hasya.

भगवान श्री रजनीश अब केवल ‘ओशो’ नाम से जाने जाते हैं। ओशो के अनुसार उनका नाम विलियम जेम्स के शब्द ‘ओशनिक’ से लिया गया है; जिसका अभिप्राय है सागर में विलीन हो जाना।
‘ओशनिक’ से अनुभूति की व्याख्या तो होती है, लेकिन वे कहते हैं कि अनुभोक्ता के संबंध में क्या? उसके लिए हम ‘ओशो’ शब्द का प्रयोग करते हैं। बाद में उन्हें पता चला कि ऐतिहासिक रूप से सुदूर पूर्व में भी ‘ओशो’ शब्द प्रयुक्त होता रहा है, जिसका अभिप्राय है : भगवत्ता को उपलब्ध व्यक्ति, जिस पर आकाश फूलों की वर्षा करता है ।
Sticker was found in the Mar 1989 edition of Bin Ghan Parat Phuhar (बिन घन परत फुहार). It was inserted into a relatively empty page announcing the name of the preface author. It is not known when the book was purchased, thus there is no clue as to when the sticker was inserted. Text of the sticker is a close translation of the William James / "Oceanic" type-D stickers. ("ओशनिक" = "oceanic" transliterated.)

Our Beloved Master has often told the story of Bodhidharma’s successor disciple – the one who, failing to find words to express the essence of Bodhidharma’s teachings, simply fell, wordless, at his feet with tears of gratitude in his eyes.
Since Our Master dropped “Bhagwan” from His name, we have been feeling a bit like that famous disciple of Bodhidharma’s, at a loss for a word to express that inexpressible-ness that He is to us. Then, in the Zen sutras, a word kept reappearing which seemed so “right” to so many of us...
“Osho is a word signifying great respect, love and gratitude... it is a way of calling someone almost divine.” Zen: The Diamond Thunderbolt
Like a seed it grew. We said to one another, “I would love to call Him ‘Osho.’” Many wrote letters to Him, expressing the same feeling. Research was done into the roots of the word, we whispered it to ourselves again and again just to get the feel of it on the tongue, round and soft and vast. Finally, on February 27, 1989, we made it “official” with 20,000 hands raised in the air. On behalf of Our Beloved Master’s two million disciples and friends around the world, we have decided to call Him “Osho Rajneesh.”
“Osho” is derived from ancient Japanese.

The announcement was made after disciples were informed that His health was improving again after a period of intense dental treatment. Ma Deva Anando said that when He appears again in the near future, “A new man will be facing you who will no longer be known as Rajneesh. He will simply be called Osho.”

Later issues
All issues until Vol 3, number 19 of Oct 10, 1990 were checked (except Vol 2, number 21, which was missing). Special attention was given to editorials and article titles. Aside from one issue, The Strange Case of OTI Vol 3 No. 06, no further references to the naming of Osho were found, other than the ones mentioned above. Also, no reference to “oceanic” was found (aside from that one issue).
Briefly, in that one issue, the WJV makes a low-profile appearance as part of a minor point in an article by Amrito. But since that issue appears to have two editions, and the WJV does not appear in both versions of the article, the story is too complicated to be told in this page. First entry in this class is a report in the Apr/May 1989 issue of Viha Connection, a reproduction of the press release of Feb 28 describing the meeting in Buddha Hall when sannyasins "voted" to go with the name Osho

TWENTY THOUSAND HANDS VOTE FOR "OSHO RAJNEESH"!

In the last month since enlightened mystic Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh dropped the controversial honorific "Bhagwan" from his name and simply became Shree Rajneesh to his two million lovers around the world, a vacuum was felt in the thousands of hearts of his friends at Rajneeshdham, Poona. What to call their beloved enlightened spiritual master?
"It was a very difficult time," admitted Ma Yoga Neelam, personal secretary to Rajneesh. "Ever since our beloved master exposed the ugliness of the word 'Bhagwan' and virtually condemned its use forever, we were all left in a bit of a gap. To call our beloved master 'Shree Rajneesh' just sounded too formal and awkward, and yet to call him 'Our Beloved Master' also seemed too long, wordy and cumbersome. But in these last few days so many friends and lovers who have come here from around the world have been spontaneously and imultaneously calling Him 'Osho' in their daily letters and questions that we finally all took a vote last night and twenty thousand hands immediately shot up into the air and confirmed the fact that our beloved master is now to be called — 'Osho Rajneesh'!"
Neelam explained that the Japanese word OSHO was first used for Bodhidharma by his disciple Eka; and thereinafter has been used for centuries by many Zen monks when intimately addressing their Zen Masters. OSHO literally means the whole man, the fully awakened one and respectfully symbolizes a man of peace, grace and love upon whom Existence is showering all its blessings from every direction.
