For titles of English books (and music etc) we use a standard system of capitalization:
:Capitalization of the first word, and all other words, except for [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Article_%28grammar%29 articles], [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preposition prepositions], and [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grammatical_conjunction conjunctions].
:Capitalization of the first word, and all other words, '''except''' for [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Article_%28grammar%29 articles], short [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preposition prepositions] (from 5 letters again capital), and [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grammatical_conjunction conjunctions].
Please see this Wikipedia article: [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titlecase#Case_styles Letter case: Case styles], the '''second line''' of the Example-table.
Please see this Wikipedia article: [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titlecase#Case_styles Letter case: Case styles], the '''third line''' of the Example-table, which has as example: "The Vitamins Are in My Fresh California Raisins".

After a colon, the next word also gets a capital, e.g. "Dogen: The Zen Master".

The same rules are applied to the sub-titles and chapter titles of English books.

For book-titles in other languages, use the rules that apply in those publishing markets. E.g. for Dutch book-titles and their subtitles and chapter titles, "sentence-style" applies: first word capitalized, other words small, except for names etc.

Capitalization is also important as page-names are case sensitive.

== Adding tables of contents ==
A TOC can be added at the end of a book page, in this format:
== table of contents ==
:1: A Gathering of Friends
:2: A New Vision of Sannyas
:3: Work Will Bring Its Own Wealth
:4: etcetera
Please only use single indents (:), not doubles (::).
The TOC always refers to the '''first edition''' of the title, unless stated otherwise.
In the body of the book page, give a link to the TOC, otherwise people don't know it's there, like this:
:In '''number of discourses/chapters''' (nofd), behind the number of chapters, enter 5 non-breaking spaces and <code><nowiki>([[#table of contents|see table of contents]])</nowiki></code>.
:To enter a non-breaking space: on a PC type ALT+255 (use the numeric keypad); on a Mac type OPTION+SPACE.
:If the line gets too long place <code><nowiki>:([[#table of contents|see table of contents]])</nowiki></code> on the next line.
Keep all <code><nowiki>[[Category:...]]</nowiki></code> lines (see next paragraph) at the very bottom of the page, so '''after the TOC'''.

Before the template system there were old handcrafted bibliographies, e.g. [[German Publications to be converted...]]. These are being phased out.

;Categories for Book-titles that start with an article
Book-titles that start with an article get a special treatment, so that their ordering in the lists is right. They should be ordered according to the words ''after'' the article, and this is achieved by modifying the Category field.
Articles e.g. in English are The, A and An, in Dutch De, Het and Een.
By entering the '''part of the title''' that is to be used for ordering the list, the normal ordering of the list is overruled.
E.g. for ''The Buddha Disease'', the categories must look like this:
::<nowiki>[[category:English Publications|Buddha Disease]]</nowiki>
::<nowiki>[[category:Darshan Diaries|Buddha Disease]]</nowiki>
As seen here, for titles starting with an article, the '''category:English Publications''' is added explicitly, so as to overrule the list-ordering. For other titles, mentioning this language category is not necessary.
;Categories for Book-titles with punctuation marks
For easier finding in the category lists, any punctuation in book titles -- a colon, comma, hyphen, dash, whatever -- should be dropped. These punctuation marks interfere with the alphabetical sorting. For example, a colon after "Krishna" in several titles makes their sort order more unnatural and potentially harder to find.
So for example, for ''Krishna: Jigyasa, Khoj, Upalabdhi (कृष्ण : जिज्ञासा, खोज, उपलब्धि)'', the category wikitext should specify a sort order, like this:
::<nowiki>[[category:Hindi Publications|Krishna Jigyasa Khoj Upalabdhi (कृष्ण जिज्ञासा खोज उपलब्धि)]]</nowiki>
::<nowiki>[[category:Indian Mystics (hi:भारतीय मनीषियों)|Krishna Jigyasa Khoj Upalabdhi (कृष्ण जिज्ञासा खोज उपलब्धि)]]</nowiki>
The text after the pipe (the "|") does not change the title but specifies how it should be sorted.
Similarly, ''Prem-Rang-Ras Odh Chadariya (प्रेम-रंग-रस ओढ़ चदरिया)'':
::<nowiki>[[category:Hindi Publications|Prem Rang Ras Odh Chadariya (प्रेम रंग रस ओढ़ चदरिया)]]</nowiki>
::<nowiki>[[category:Indian Mystics (hi:भारतीय मनीषियों)‎|Prem Rang Ras Odh Chadariya (प्रेम रंग रस ओढ़ चदरिया)]]</nowiki>
::<nowiki>[[category:Not Translated to English (hi:अंग्रेजी में अनूदित नहीं)|Prem Rang Ras Odh Chadariya (प्रेम रंग रस ओढ़ चदरिया)]]</nowiki>
::<nowiki>[[category:First Edition Series (hi:प्रथम संस्करण सीरीज)|Prem Rang Ras Odh Chadariya (प्रेम रंग रस ओढ़ चदरिया)]]</nowiki>
Doing this arranges all the titles beginning with "Prem" -- and there are nineteen of them -- into a more natural order.

== Rules for event names ==
* '''General''': use the first name how a discourse is known, especially if that is the name of a real book.
* Exception: if Osho himself changed the name (e.g. [[From Unconsciousness to Consciousness ~ 01]]).
* Exception: if a new title is so universally used that it is only creating confusion to use the older one (e.g. [[Vigyan Bhairav Tantra Vol 1 ~ 01]]).
* '''Special''': even if a title has not been published in a book, we may still use that name if that seems to be a more original or discerning title (e.g. [[Aaj Ki Rajneeti ~ 01]]).
* When unclear under above rules, pick a name that best describes the discourse, reckons with how it is generally known and under what name it is available, and also keeps the number of different "series" to a minimum. Example: [[Path Ki Khoj ~ 05]].

'''Pune / Poona''' and '''Mumbai / Bombay'''

Many Indian cities have changed their names since 1947. Most such changes will have little impact in the Sannyas Wiki, but these two cities have a special resonance in the  hearts of Osho's people, and a potential conundrum arises regarding how to represent them here. Standard bibliographical practice is to use the name current at the time of publication if the location of the publisher is mentioned; thus, a 1993 Rebel edition might mention Poona and a 1996 one Pune. Mumbai and Pune both changed around 1995. Most of Osho's discourses were given in Bombay and Poona, but these old names are associated with the old colonial empire-wallahs and as they drift further into the past, they may also become irrelevant, annoying or confusing.

Help for making and editing book-pages in the Sannyas Wiki

Book page-names

Book page-names follow the title on the book as much as possible, so including semicolons, commas, brackets etc.

Don't Let Yourself Be Upset by the Sutra, rather Upset the Sutra Yourself
Won't You Join the Dance?

Misspellings in book titles or sub-titles are left as they are, this can be commented on in the book-notes.

Books with different names always get a new entry:

A Compilation on Osho Dynamic Meditation
A Compendium on Osho Dynamic Meditation
Books with more than one volume
Sufis: The People of the Path, Vol 1

So "Volume" in the title is on the wiki page shown as "Vol".

But if "volume" is not used, the designation follows the book: Vigyan Bhairav Tantra, First Series, Vigyan Bhairav Tantra, Second Series.

Identical titles
The first one And Now, And Here
Second one And Now, And Here (2)

So: add a number (2) between brackets after the name.

Capitalization

For titles of English books (and music etc) we use a standard system of capitalization:

Capitalization of the first word, and all other words, except for articles, short prepositions (from 5 letters again capital), and conjunctions.

Please see this Wikipedia article: Letter case: Case styles, the third line of the Example-table, which has as example: "The Vitamins Are in My Fresh California Raisins".

Number of pages

The number of pages is either:

  • The last page-number printed in the book,
  • OR if the "main content" of the book (not About the author etc.) runs beyond the last page number, then count from the highest page-number printed to the last page of main content.

The page set-up : Templates for Osho books

All Osho book-pages are formatted via two templates. The main template is Template:Book. Within this book template, for each edition there can be a Template:Bookedition.

Fields in templates are separated by a |.

In the explanation below, fixed text in templates is bold.

wikitext notes
{{ book | The name of the template
description = A description of the book | E.g. from the flap text, or a typical text from the book, like one of the first sentences from Osho. When using a second paragraph, start with a colon for the correct indentation.
translated = Hindi: [[Hindi title ]] | E.g. translated from some Hindi book in the wiki
notes = General notes on this book | E.g. Previously published as ...
Chapters 9-15 later published in Sufis: The People of the Path : The Royal Way.
Discourses given at Mt Abu, Rajasthan, India.
period = Oct 21, 1975 to Oct 30, 1975 | The date of the first and last discourse/letter.
year = 1975 | A link to the year of the first discourse.
This will render the wiki-code : [[Osho_Discourses_1975|discourse details]] |
If no year=xxxx| is found, the template will render : [[Osho_Discourses_ |discourse details]] |
nofd = 21| The number of chapters, as shown in the table of contents, so usually excluding an introduction, preface, afterword etc.
editions = Here the sub-templates for editions start. There can be as many as needed.
{{bookedition| cover.jpg | subtitle | year | publisher | edition no | isbn | pages | H/P/E | edition notes }}

{{bookedition| cover.jpg | subtitle | year | publisher | edition no | isbn | pages | H/P/E | edition notes }}
|

language = English | This field can only contain the language. It takes care of categories in the footer. (See the results of the Example section at the bottom of this page.)
}} Here, the book-template ends.
[[category:Darshan Diaries]] Category of the book, like [[category:Responses to Questions]] [[category:World Tour]]
See below for an explanation of categories and wiki-lists.

A book can get as many editions as needed. An edition is entered separately if:

  • it is another edition in its strict sense: different content as regards text or illustrations or lay-out
  • or it has a different ISBN
  • or it has a different cover

A book can be included in an existing edition if it is only a new imprint, and no further changes in content. In that case field "Year of publication" gets a second line, containing e.g. "::Reprint: 1982".

These situations are shown e.g. in The Supreme Doctrine.

Use of the bookedition:

wikitext notes
{{ bookedition | The title of the book is automatically generated from the title of the wiki-page.
cover.jpg | Use 100dpi scans, except when there is small print, then you can use 200dpi.

Note that the blank.jpg image is used when a cover image is not available.

subtitle | The subtitle from the cover or the title-page in the book

When book and cover have different subtitles, use e.g.:
" Discourses on Sufism''' (cover)<br>'''Talks on Sufi Stories''' (book) "
as in Just Like That.

year of publication | 1980
Reprint : 1982
publisher | Publisher (city, country)
edition number | 1
isbn | ISBN-10 or ISBN-13, as used in the book. Many Poona1 books have no printed ISBN, sometimes the ISBN is stickered on. Then add (Not all books have an ISBN).
number of pages | Either the number of the last numbered page in the book, or -- if page numbering stops before the unique content of the book stops -- count the extra content pages.
H or P or E | H for Hardcover, P for Paperback, E for eBook, ? for unknown
edition notes So not book notes.

First is always notes from the book about the edition, like "First edition, August 1980, 5,000 copies." and the copyright statement(s), like "© Copyright 1980 Rajneesh Foundation."
The further edition notes are on a new line and begin with a double colon :: for indentation.
If available, note the size of the book as height x width x thickness in mm.
If the author of the book is not mentioned as Osho, note e.g. "Author as Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh".
Next "Published by ...".
Next, in the order stated in the book, all sannyas-persons and -companies that worked on the book and are mentioned: editors, designers, etc.
For sannyasins, use brackets [[...]] to make them clickable. Titles are mentioned as they appear in the book.
Meta-remarks are mentioned, like "In loving gratitude to Bhagwan, ..." or "Dedicated to ..." or "Talks given to the Rajneesh International University of Mysticism".
Next come the external parties, like the typesetter, printer and binder.
Last are the authors of the Introduction and of the Flap text.

}} Here, the bookedition-template ends.

Many book-pages started their life without the template-system. They will all be converted to the new system.

Example

Following is a book page with many examples for content. Edit this section to check how to enter these examples.

Adding tables of contents

A TOC can be added at the end of a book page, in this format:

table of contents

1: A Gathering of Friends
2: A New Vision of Sannyas
3: Work Will Bring Its Own Wealth
4: etcetera

Please only use single indents (:), not doubles (::).

The TOC always refers to the first edition of the title, unless stated otherwise.

In the body of the book page, give a link to the TOC, otherwise people don't know it's there, like this:

In number of discourses/chapters (nofd), behind the number of chapters, enter 5 non-breaking spaces and ([[#table of contents|see table of contents]]).
To enter a non-breaking space: on a PC type ALT+255 (use the numeric keypad); on a Mac type OPTION+SPACE.
If the line gets too long place :([[#table of contents|see table of contents]]) on the next line.

Keep all [[Category:...]] lines (see next paragraph) at the very bottom of the page, so after the TOC.

Categories and wiki-lists

The special Category-fields that are added at the bottom of wiki-pages are used to give context to the page and put the pages on the right lists, like the Category:English Publications or .

Examples:

wikitext notes
[[category:Darshan Diaries]] For English Darshan Diaries
[[category:Darshan Diaries (de:Darshan Tagebücher)]] For German Darshan Diaries
[[category:Meditation (books)]] For English books on Meditation (there are also topic-pages on meditation, that's why the (books) qualifier)
[[category:Meditation (fr:Méditation)‎]] For French books on Meditation
[[category:Translations from English (hi:अंग्रेजी से अनुवाद)]] For Hindi books translated from English
[[category:Yoga (books)]]

You will find all the categories for a language in the header of its Bibliography page, like for English or Hindi or Bulgarian.

Btw, the Bibliography is under construction. Pages like these: Category:English Publications are the new set-up. The new-style book pages (with the templates as explained above) refer there.

Before the template system there were old handcrafted bibliographies, e.g. German Publications to be converted.... These are being phased out.

Categories for Book-titles that start with an article

Book-titles that start with an article get a special treatment, so that their ordering in the lists is right. They should be ordered according to the words after the article, and this is achieved by modifying the Category field.

Articles e.g. in English are The, A and An, in Dutch De, Het and Een.

By entering the part of the title that is to be used for ordering the list, the normal ordering of the list is overruled.

E.g. for The Buddha Disease, the categories must look like this:

[[category:English Publications|Buddha Disease]]
[[category:Darshan Diaries|Buddha Disease]]

As seen here, for titles starting with an article, the category:English Publications is added explicitly, so as to overrule the list-ordering. For other titles, mentioning this language category is not necessary.

Categories for Book-titles with punctuation marks

For easier finding in the category lists, any punctuation in book titles -- a colon, comma, hyphen, dash, whatever -- should be dropped. These punctuation marks interfere with the alphabetical sorting. For example, a colon after "Krishna" in several titles makes their sort order more unnatural and potentially harder to find.

So for example, for Krishna: Jigyasa, Khoj, Upalabdhi (कृष्ण : जिज्ञासा, खोज, उपलब्धि), the category wikitext should specify a sort order, like this:

[[category:Hindi Publications|Krishna Jigyasa Khoj Upalabdhi (कृष्ण जिज्ञासा खोज उपलब्धि)]]
[[category:Indian Mystics (hi:भारतीय मनीषियों)|Krishna Jigyasa Khoj Upalabdhi (कृष्ण जिज्ञासा खोज उपलब्धि)]]

The text after the pipe (the "|") does not change the title but specifies how it should be sorted.

Similarly, Prem-Rang-Ras Odh Chadariya (प्रेम-रंग-रस ओढ़ चदरिया):

[[category:Not Translated to English (hi:अंग्रेजी में अनूदित नहीं)|Prem Rang Ras Odh Chadariya (प्रेम रंग रस ओढ़ चदरिया)]]
[[category:First Edition Series (hi:प्रथम संस्करण सीरीज)|Prem Rang Ras Odh Chadariya (प्रेम रंग रस ओढ़ चदरिया)]]

Doing this arranges all the titles beginning with "Prem" -- and there are nineteen of them -- into a more natural order.

Remarks on special categories
wikitext notes
[[category:First Edition Series]] For books where Osho's original English words were first published in English.
[[category:First Edition Series (hi:प्रथम संस्करण सीरीज)]] For books where Osho's original Hindi words were first published in Hindi.
[[category:Translated First Editions‎]] For books where a Hindi first edition is translated into English.

The English book can be a first or later edition, as long as the translation is based on the first Hindi edition.
A special case is Towards the Unknown which has not been published in Hindi, but the Hindi material does have a name and a known translator.
If an English book has both material from a first Hindi edition translated to English, and a first publication of original English words, it gets both [[Translated First Editions‎]] and [[category:First Edition Series]].

[[category:Translated to English (अंग्रेजी में अनूदित)]] and

[[category:Not Translated to English (अंग्रेजी में अनूदित नहीं)]]

Two categories used exclusively for First Edition Hindi books. This allows us to easily see which Hindi books have and have not (yet) been translated.

The categories above are for books by Osho. The books by sannyasins are in the Sannyas Bibliography. This contains categories like category:Gift and Photo Books‎ and category:Newspapers and Magazines‎‎.

[[category:Books on Osho‎]] is a special case, as this is also used for Osho's own books: Glimpses of a Golden Childhood.

Auto-linking fields

The book and edition templates have some fields that will automatically generate clickable links.

In the book template notes
| year = 1975 | This will render the wiki-code "[[Osho_Discourses_1975|discourse details]]"

If the year is empty, the template will render "[[Osho_Discourses_ |discourse details]]"

| language = Hindi | This will render the wiki-code "[[Category: Hindi Publications]]" and not only place the link to that category at the bottom of the page but enter a link to the book into that category's list of members.
In the bookedit template
| publisher = Rajneesh Foundation, Poona, India | This will render the wiki-code "[[Rajneesh Foundation, Poona, India]]"

If the publisher field is empty, the template will just render a set of empty square brackets [[ ]].
Please enter in publisher the name as found in the book. If this name is not one of the publishers listed in category:Books - Publication & Retail, you need to create a REDIRECT page.

| ISBN = 0-88050-138-3 | This will render the wiki-code "[[:Special:BookSources/0880501383]]"

If the ISBN field is empty, the template will render nothing.
The resulting Book sources page will show a set of links to external websites with further details about this edition.

Rules for event names

  • General: use the first name how a discourse is known, especially if that is the name of a real book.
  • Exception: if Osho himself changed the name (e.g. From Unconsciousness to Consciousness ~ 01).
  • Exception: if a new title is so universally used that it is only creating confusion to use the older one (e.g. Vigyan Bhairav Tantra Vol 1 ~ 01).
  • Special: even if a title has not been published in a book, we may still use that name if that seems to be a more original or discerning title (e.g. Aaj Ki Rajneeti ~ 01).
  • When unclear under above rules, pick a name that best describes the discourse, reckons with how it is generally known and under what name it is available, and also keeps the number of different "series" to a minimum. Example: Path Ki Khoj ~ 05.

Other Guidelines

Pune / Poona and Mumbai / Bombay

Many Indian cities have changed their names since 1947. Most such changes will have little impact in the Sannyas Wiki, but these two cities have a special resonance in the hearts of Osho's people, and a potential conundrum arises regarding how to represent them here. Standard bibliographical practice is to use the name current at the time of publication if the location of the publisher is mentioned. Mumbai and Pune both changed around 1995; thus, a 1993 Rebel edition might mention Poona and a 1996 one Pune. Most of Osho's discourses were given in Bombay and Poona, but these old names are associated with the old colonial empire-wallahs and as they drift further into the past, they may also become irrelevant, annoying or confusing.

To deal with all this, the wiki has evolved a not-entirely consistent approach which aims above all to be accessible and relevant, and so it is basically context-dependent:

  • For publisher locations, quotes, institutional and other proper names, the name as it was at the time shall be used.
  • In text about books or talks, the modern names shall be used.
  • In the Osho Timeline pages, both shall be used, as Pune (Poona) and Mumbai (Bombay).
