Re the most recent edit, which got rid of the "Getting a user account" section and replaced it with a "Helping with this Wiki" section, the new approach has streamlined things but there are a couple of issues:

1. There is still text remaining in the page which refers to user accounts but now nothing explaining what they are, why anyone might want one, how to get one, etc.
2. The rationale for the change, that user accounts are "only for people on the editorial team", overlooks the substantial group of those who edit their own personal pages, exactly the type of person addressed by much of the page.

I feel there is still some value in encouraging people to get user accounts, as someone may get a feel for editing that way and move toward becoming a more general editor. A user account can be presented as an alternative to working with an editor to edit your own page. Without this alternative, the "wiki editor" is presented as a kind of elite class that nobody should think of joining. -- doofus-9 08:14, 15 August 2021 (UTC)

The thing is: we have tried to get editors in this way for many years, but about 0 editors have come up in this way. And now we have many people with editor-rights, of whom 99% do nothing, and 1% do a lot. Those many editors are a strain on the system, it would be better to clean up those rights and give editor rights only to people who make many edits. Rudra has been working on this, but it is not easy, probably a manual job.

But I agree that we should not give an impression of being unwelcome.

How about making a small paragraph about editors:

People that are going to make many edits and are part of the editorial team can get an editor-account.
