Sw Ageh Bharti dedicated whole ch.3 to Gadarwara Public Library in his Beloved Osho book and listed books issued by Osho from Gadarwara Public Library. See this list below the page.
He says:
- It is surprising indeed to note that at a very tender age Osho had read so voraciously. Later, at Poona, Osho would finish as many as fourteen books in a day but as an adolescent, he would as many as four books issued at a time in a day. These numbers baffle and both the above records are remarkable in themselves. Probably, according to rule only one book was issued to a member at a time in public library. This is why Osho would get books issued in different names like Shikhar Chand Jain (Kaka ji, who is now known as Swami Anand Siddhartha), Vijay Kumar Jain (brother who is now known as Swami Vijay Bharti) and Aklank Jain (Second younger brother). In this way he would get four books issued in one day. It is a fact - not that I have been told about this, I have myself seen the names mentioned in the pages of the registers - the columns for the members name bear as many as four names viz, Rajneesh Chandra Mohan, Shikhar Chand Jain, Vijay Kumar and Aklank. Against these names are mentioned the names of those who issued the books and then of those who deposited them and it bears the signature of Rajneesh alone. This fact alone goes to prove that Osho got the family members enrolled to have more and more books to study.
- ...The detail of all that has been done in the library is given here. Those who love Osho would certainly like to go through them (as for me, I enjoyed that although there have been moments when I felt bored. Even so, the task was sufficiently interesting, otherwise, what was the need to take the trouble -there was no compulsion as such). This material may also be of use to those who would be interested in doing Research work. I was quite thrilled even in enlisting the names of books, which Osho has read as an adolescent. In fact, the task of writing was adequately uninteresting and boring whereas going through the names of those books was greatly fascinating. The names of nearly twenty-five such books may have been omitted as going through those names could not be possible due to the then librarian Shri Joshi's illegible hand, and, due to lack of time between hundred, hundred, and fifty names could not be included in the list.
After his list he adds:
- (Note: - Only two books had been issued in 1945. In the same way between 12.12.46 and 02.01.48 (after one year and twenty days) books have been issued. It is quite likely that the register containing the record is missing. This period had been the period of political upheaval in India. This may also be the reason for the missing list)
- It may be concluded from the above list that in some cases Osho got the same book issued twice or thrice. From the records available, Osho read the "Pauranik Mahapurush" (Ethical Stories) from the above library when he was barely ten years and three fifty nine days old. Every register bears his signature and the date of issuing and depositing the book. Going through books and studying books on different subjects, not only speaks volumes of his brilliance but is amazing also. Even from the records that are available the list of nearly one hundred and fifty to two hundred books are missing. If the number of personal books read and gifted by him is taken into consideration (see Books gifted to the Gadarwara Library), taking ninety-two books on an average in one almirah, the names of as many as three hundred and sixty eight books are left. It is so because ninety-two books have been traced in one cupboard whereas four cupboards have been left. In this way if a comprehensive list of books could be had, 1229 books (569 + 200 + 92 + 368) more could be available. The list, which I could get, is of 562 + 92 = 661 books. The registers of one and a half years and one year of the interim period are not available. There is a strong probability that the register of that period (one year and a half) has been taken away by some one. Because it was learnt that one Mr. Kabra when he was the chairperson of the library committee or was holding some important designation, took away all the cards on which books were issued. Osho had written the books' name with his own hand and had signed too. I had a desire to see him but he had been away and was not available.
