Letter written on 12 Feb 1963

The letter is dated 12th February 1963 in the evening and addressed to Lala Sundarlal Jain, a son of Lala Motilal Jain, the founder of the major Indological publishing house, Motilal Banarsidass. The salutation is his customary one of those times, "प्रिय आत्मन", or "Beloved Soul".

The wiki has no image of the letter but we have made a transcription of the text from its first known publication, in the Oct 1 1969 issue of Yukrand (युक्रांद, Indian magazine), image right, text below. That issue of Yukrand has five letters addressed to Sundarlalji, introduced thusly:

पत्र प्रेरणा

(ला० सुन्दरलाल जी, बंगलो रोड-जवाहर नगर दिल्ली-७ को प्राचार्य रजनीश जी द्वारा लिखे गये कुछ पत्र)

It appears also to have been published in Prem Ke Phool (प्रेम के फूल), a collection of early letters, as the text description of Prem Ke Phool ~ 019, the letter on this date in the 1963 Timeline, matches closely a loose translation of the transcription below. And the full translation turns up in the CD-ROM's version of A Cup of Tea, as letter #13.

प्रिय यात्मन् ।

प्रणाम । मैं अभी अभी राज नगर (राजस्थान) से लौटा हूं। वहाँ आचार्य श्री तुलसी के मर्यादा महोत्सव में आमंत्रित था। कोई ४०० साधु-साध्वियों को ध्यान योग के सामूहिक प्रयोग से परिचित कराया है। अद्भुत परिणाम हए हैं । मेरा देखना है कि ध्यान समग्र धर्म साधना का केन्द्रीय तत्व है और शेष, अहिंसा, अपरिग्रह, ब्रह्मचर्य आदि उसके परिणाम हैं। ध्यान की पूर्णतासमाधि-उपलब्ध होने से वे अपने आप चले आते हैं। उन का विकास सहज ही हो जाता है। इस मूल साधना को भूल जाने से हमारा सब प्रयास बाह्म और सतही हो कर रह जाता है। धर्म साधना कोरी नैतिक साधना नहीं है; वह मूलतः योग साधना है । केवल नीति नकारात्मक है और नकार पर कोई स्थायी भित्ति खड़ी नहीं है । योग विधायक है और इसलिये वह आधार है । मैं इस विधायक आधार को सब तक पहुंचा देना चाहता है। १२ फरवरी १९६३ रात्रि ।
