View source for Letter written on 26 Oct 1962

This is one of hundreds of letters Osho wrote to [[Ma Anandmayee]], then known as Madan Kunwar Parakh. It was written in Gadarwara on 26th October 1962. The letterhead has a simple "रजनीश" (Rajneesh) in the top left area, in a heavy but florid font, and "115, Napier Town, Jabalpur (M.P.)" in the top right, in a lighter but still somewhat florid font.

Osho's salutation in this letter is a fairly typical "प्रिय मां", Priya Maan, Dear Mom. In the PS, he mentions being in Gadarwara since the 24th and staying until the 31st.

There are a couple of the hand-written marks that have been observed in other letters: a black tick mark in the upper right corner and a mirror-image number in the bottom right corner, with a new variation on that theme. Quite a few recent letters have actually had two numbers there, one crossed out (n) and replaced by a pink number two numbers higher (n + 2), pink being a red pen on the reverse side showing through. This one has only a pink number, 143.

The letter has been published in ''[[Krantibeej (क्रांतिबीज)]]'' as letter 85 (edited and trimmed text) and later in ''[[Bhavna Ke Bhojpatron Par Osho (भावना के भोजपत्रों पर ओशो)]]'' (2002 Diamond edition, p 168). There the date is represented as 29 Sep, but it is the same letter. [[Letter written on 29 Oct 1962]] is opposite it on p 169, it is also mysteriously mis-dated, as Sep 21.

In the PS Osho writes: "On 24th I have come to home - will stay here up to 31. Today morning, remembered Shyam - how is Shyam? Is he meditating? And Pramila, too. Convey my love to both of them."

प्रिय मां,<br>
धूप में मंदिरों के कलश चमक रहे हैं। आकाश खुला है और राह पर लोगों की भीड़ बढ़ती जाती है। मैं राह चलते लोगों को देखता हूँ – पर, न मालुम क्यों ऐसा नहीं लगता कि वे जीवित हैं। जीवन का, अस्तित्व का बोध न हो तो किसी को जीवित कैसे कहा जासकता है? जीवन आता है और कब व्यय होजाता है यह जैसे ज्ञात ही नहीं होपाता है। साधरणतः, जब मृत्यु की घड़ियां आती हैं तब जीवन का बोध होता है। एक कहानी पढ़ी थी। एक व्यक्ति था बिल्कुल भुलक्कड़। वह भूल ही गया था कि वह जीवित है फिर एक दिन सुबह वह उठा और उसने पाया कि वह मर गया है तब उसे ज्ञात हुआ था कि वह जीवित भी था! यह कहानी में बहुत सत्य है। 

मैं इस कहानी का स्मरण कर रहा हूँ : बहुत हंसी आती है कि मरकर भी किसीने पाया है कि वह जीवित था – पर, हंसी धीरे-धीरे उदासी में बदल जाती है। यह कैसी स्थिति है – यह कैसी दयनीय स्थिति है! 

मैं यह सोच ही रहा हूँ कि कुछ लोग आगए हैं। उन्हें देखता हूँ। उनकी बातें सुनता हूँ। उनकी आंखों में झांकता हूँ। जीवन उनमें कहीं भी नहीं है। वे तो जैसे छायाओं की तरह हैं। सारा जगत्‌ छायाओं से भर गया है। अपने ही हाथों अधिक लोग प्रेतलोक में रह रहे हैं। और इन छायाओं के भीतर जीवित आग है – जीवन है लेकिन उन्हें इसका पता ही नहीं है। इस छाया-जीवन के भीतर वास्तविक जीवन है : इस प्रेत-जीवन के पार सत्य जीवन भी है जिसे अभी और यहीं पाया जासकता है। 

और इसे पाने की शर्त कितनी छोटी है? 

और इसे पाने का उपाय कितना सरल है? 

कल मैंने कहा है : दृष्टि को भीतर ले चलना है।
