Letter to Seth Bhagwandas ji in Sagar MP

This letter is not known to have been previously published. It has been offered by Osho's brother Shailendra, who has kindly transcribed and translated it, text below. Shailendra was given the letter by the son of Seth Bhagwandas in a visit to Sagar, where Osho had gone for his MA degree. In the letter he explains why he does not want to do research work for a PhD. Note the wildly stylized presentation of his name in his official letterhead of that time, when he was a professor of philosophy in Jabalpur. (Click on the image to enlarge.)

आचार्य रजनीश दर्शन विभाग महाकोशल कला महाविद्यालय 115, नेपियर टाउन, जबलपुर (म. प्र.) सेवा में, श्री सेठ भगवानदास जी जैन सागर (म. प्र.) प्रिय आत्मन्, प्रणाम। आपका कृपा-पत्र मिला है। मैं बाहर था इसलिए उत्तर में विलम्ब हो गया है। संत तारण तरण-साहित्य पर श्री ठाकुर प्रसाद जी शोध-कार्य करना चाहते हैं। उनकी भावना और लगन है तो कार्य हो सकेगा। मैं जो भी सहायता संभव होगी, अवश्य कर सकूंगा। मेरे पास स्वयं समय अब नहीं है कि पूरे कार्य को अपने हाथ में ले सकूं। शास्त्रीय दिशा में कोई रुचि भी नहीं रही है। यह दर्शन हुआ है कि सत्य-साधना में शास्त्र में नहीं, स्व में जाना आवश्यक है। इसलिए, मैं स्वयं अब उस आंतरिक यात्रा पर हूं। सब बाह्य यात्रा व्यर्थ हो गई है। श्री ब्रह्मचारी जी महाराज का पत्र और आमंत्रण भी मिला है। इस कृपा के लिए मैं अनुग्रहीत हूं। किंतु जून के पूरे माह को एकांत में बिता रहा हूं इसलिए अभी मेरा आना सागर नहीं हो सकता है। बर्षा में कभी वहां आ सकूंगा लेकिन किन्हीं सामाजिक कार्यों के सम्बंध में बातें करने नहीं। उस संबंध में अब मेरी कोई दृष्टि या धारणा नहीं है। धर्म बिल्कुल वैयक्तिक साधना है। समाज, संगठन और संप्रदाय से उसका कोई नाता नहीं है। श्री ब्रह्मचारी जी एवं अन्य सबको मेरे विनम्र प्रणाम कहें। श्री ठाकुर प्रसाद जी सागर आयें तो उन्हें लौटते में मुझसे मिलते हुए जाने को कहें। यह जानकर प्रसन्नता हुई कि श्री ब्रह्मचारी जी का स्वास्थ्य अब ठीक है। रजनीश के प्रणाम दोपहर 3 जून 1963 Acharya Rajneesh Department of Philosophy Mahakoshal Arts College 115, Napier Town, Jabalpur (M.P.) In service, Shree Seth Bhagwandas ji jain Sagar (M.P.) Dear soul, Regards. I received your grace-letter. I was out of town so my reply got delayed. Shree Thakur Prasad wants to do research on Saint Taaran Taran's literature. If he has deep feelings and enthusiasm, then work will be done. Whatever help I can do I will definitely do. I do not have the time myself now that I can take the whole work into my own hands. There is no interest in an intellectual direction. It has been observed that in truth-practice, it is necessary to go within oneself, not in the scriptures. Therefore, I myself am now on that inner journey. All external travel has become meaningless. Letters and invitations of Shri Brahmachari ji Maharaj have also been received. I am thankful for this grace. But I am spending my entire month of June in aloneness, so I can not be at Sagar. I can be there in Monsoon season but not to discuss about any social work. In that respect, I have no vision or belief. Religion is absolutely personal practice. There is no relationship with society, organization and sect. Say my humble salutation to Shree Brahmachari and all others. Ask Shree Thakur Prasad ji to come and meet me when he returns.
