interview transcript

Swaram: Hello and welcome to the Love Osho podcast! My name is Swaram and I'm the host. Thanks for tuning in and being here. Today our guest is Radha and we are going to talk about sex, tantra, meditation, and Osho. I'll discuss with Radha the role of sex in health and wellbeing and how to live a natural sexuality and how to consciously use sexual energy. I'm so excited to have Radha on the show. Radha is a wonderful lady full of love and a dear friend. Radha has learnt tantra and meditation directly from Osho, and has been teaching for around 25 years after Osho left the body. Radha travels extensively all over the world to share her experience, silence, love, and energy with people from all walks of life. I hope you enjoy the show with Radha. Radha, welcome to the show! How are you?
Radha: Hi Swaram. Very good, thank you.
Swaram: Before we get into discussion on sex, tantra, and sexual energy, tell us a bit about your background.
Radha: I come from Italy, Naples, South of Italy, from a very narrow-minded religious background. I have parents…. upper-class aristocratic type of family. And my mother was extremely religious, so I was sent to a nun's school. When I was 14-15, I decided that I had to run away from home, because my father was a very strict type of father. And, there was no freedom in my family, as far as the girls were concerned. At the age of 15 the whole town was upside down because this young girl was nowhere to be found. This gave me a leverage to get my freedom back. So at 16 I dropped out of school and decided to go and work and do things I really would need in life. And quickly after that, I went away to England to work and to do various experiences. Then at the age of 19, I ended up meeting some people who were the disciples of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, today known as Osho, and then at 19 and a half I was at Osho's feet.
Swaram: You describe the story of a perfect rebel, and also very young, who finds the courage at that age of 15-16, to rebel against such a strict society, which I know very well because I'm also from Italy, from the South. So I feel your pain. That says a lot about your spirit and your character and your personality. So, tell us now a little bit about your meeting with Osho. You just mentioned that you went to England, and you came into contact with Osho sannyasins. Is that how you then were led to meet Osho?
Radha: Yes, I was on a journey, a hitchhiking journey in order to find out what I wanted to do in my life. I ended up meeting some Osho disciples, some of the very early disciples… I met many people on that journey, which lasted for about a year, but the most unusual people were these people who were wearing orange clothes, and I met particularly one of them in Munich... they had orange, they had necklaces with a picture on their neck of the Master, and they were very different from all the hippies that I had met on my travels. Everyone I met was wonderful, but these people had a special quality, which was to me a mystery and indescribable. And it scared me so much that I right away left Munich. I went on with my journey and ended up coming back there about four or five months later. And with one of them we decided to go - it was at that point 1974… to go and meet the Master. What happened before that was that I found in their house a little journal, a little magazine, and this magazine contained some of His discourses. And the main discourse that really blew me away was a discourse on Tantra. For me, that was the main call. I never heard a spiritual person speak so beautifully and openly about sexuality and sex.
Swaram: It would be very interesting to hear a little bit about the early days in Poona. So give us a sense of how was it to be with Osho in those early days.
Radha: When I arrived in Poona, Osho had recently moved there - He had moved in April, and I arrived on the 1st December 1974. And it all was a very quiet and small situation. There were only two houses in Koregaon Park, which belonged to sannyasins. One of them was closed to the public, and that's where Osho lived, that is what he called later “Lao Tzu”. I arrived there in the evening. It was so quiet that I actually hardly met anyone. And then I was told to come back after one or two days to meet Him in person. Altogether I would say there were maybe about 10 or 12 Western people, and maybe about 20-30 Indian people - not so many were living inside the houses. And then I met Him the next night. And that was a mind- blowing experience for me. I was, as you have heard, a rebellious person, I didn't want to hear about spiritual people because all I had heard about spirituality was religion, not spirituality. I had heard about rules and regulations, laws and punishments, right and wrong. And so for me to go there and show all this respect was a little doubtful. But when I saw Him, the moment I walked into the porch where he was receiving about eight people, I felt like I was entering a completely different dimension. And as I got called up, I came to his feet and bowed down and it was very spontaneous and a very “no-mind” experience. And when I looked up, I just saw his eyes. He was looking like... I was like looking into emptiness, an emptiness that totally welcomed me. And then He said, “Hello Radha. You have come". And it was the first time in my life when I felt really welcome, absolutely welcome, and welcome just the way I was. That's it. {laughter}.
Swaram: That's really wonderful to hear. I have goosebumps. So you had a chance to be physically close to Him and to have some intimate moments when you could ask Him personal questions. I'm curious to know if there is any question that you asked Him or any incident that you feel has left an indelible mark on you.
Radha: I think there were millions of indelible marks {laughter}… whether it was by talking, whether it was Him answering questions in the lectures - questions of mine - or Him touching me in my third eye during the energy transmissions. There are many, many moments which were - which are - indelible for me.
Swaram: It sounds like the whole experience with Osho is indelible. Okay, so let's talk about, sex and Tantra now, because that's your area of expertise. Osho is well known for being the “Sex Guru”. This nickname comes from a discourse Osho gave in the late sixties which has been transcribed in a book called "From Sex to Superconsciousness". And from that moment onwards, people started talking and addressing Osho as the sex guru. It seems, people forgot the second part of the sentence and focused on the first one only- sex! And forgot all about superconsciousness. And I think that's quite indicative of the obsession about sex, which was dominant in those days. So my question to you is: do you think there is any change in the attitude of society towards sex from those times, sixties and seventies, till today? Do you see any difference?
Radha: Unfortunately, I don't see a huge change. The only difference is that sex has become something to talk about, a lot. But the level of the talk is always, I would say, horizontal, always entertaining the mind with it. And always leaving sex as something separate from the natural man, the conscious man - of course, men and women. So unfortunately, even today, the sex that Osho is speaking about is something really, I would say, for the chosen few; for people who have decided to live their life in a natural and conscious way. And we need a lot of focus to come to that, a lot of understanding. So, I would not say that there is a big change. Internet has transformed obsession and repression into perversion almost, because a lot of kids that I meet, tell me that still their parents never told them much about sex. Or if they told them about it, it would be sex, which is an okay sex, and there's nothing wrong with that, but it's a very narrow experience. On the contrary, if they go on internet and they look for something that has to do with sex, it's all about freedom in being perverted. I use this word perversion meaning… for me perversion is simply when sexual energy is actually transferred to the mind. Sexual energy is not lived totally and it’s, in fact, a mental experience. So, a lot of people that finally realise that freedom in sex is, in fact, a very disappointing experience, they are the people who then want to do something different about themselves.
Swaram: Okay, if I understand correctly, what you're saying is that unfortunately nothing much has changed and it seems like the pendulum has shifted to the other end of the spectrum; meaning: before you couldn't talk about sex, there was sexual repression. Whereas now you can talk about sex, there is lots of sexual images and content available, especially on internet, but that doesn't mean that people are free and they enjoy their sexuality and their sexual energy in a natural way, which is, I guess, is the whole point of Osho's message. So Osho's message is very relevant today, and there is lots of work to do to get people to understand how to live their sexual energy in a more natural and conscious way. Is that what you’ve described?
Radha: Yes, for me, unless you experience a natural way to have sex and to see sex, it's very difficult for anyone to understand. You need the experience. And for me, I was extremely lucky to arrive at 19 to Osho, because I was offered on the silver plate all the freedom I wanted. And also to make as many mistakes as possible. So for me, without any judgements, to be able to have experienced all this, gives me today the capacity to see the difference. And the freedom was not necessarily indulgence, although that was also going with that, but parallel to that, there was a very deep interest in knowing ourselves and meditation, which is the same thing. So it was always in parallel indulgence and awareness, freedom and consciousness, all the time. So that lucky experience that I had, is in fact where my background is and what gives me the courage and the strength and capacity to be able to work with people the way I do.
Swaram: It seems to me that for you Tantra comprises all these elements of freedom, self-discovery, meditation, and of course sex, altogether. And that's probably why when you left the Ashram, when you came out of Poona, you decided to teach Tantra and become a Tantra teacher. And we'll talk about your school “Tantralife”. But let's start with the steps that led you to become a Tantra expert and teacher.
Radha: There wasn't any rational decision made. What happened was that there was a moment after a long retreat, which I did a couple of years after Osho left the body, that really gave me the clarity that I had a lot to share, but I wasn't really clear in which way I could. And I asked myself, what is it that I really love? And I felt that - well, of course meditation, and I also like people, I am so interested and curious about people's paths, situation and life. So for me, it was clear in that moment that I wanted to share what I had experienced with Osho. And it was clear that I wanted to share it with people who were interested, but I had no clarity on where and in what. So I decided to do a world-tour {laughter} and just find out, first of all, in which nation I would like to share this; because for me… my Italian roots were not so strong anymore, after all those years. We are talking now about, the year 92/93, so 20 years later...
Swaram: You lived in India for the same time as you lived in Italy, essentially.
Radha: Yes, at that point maybe even more. I was in India and then Oregon, basically, yes, all the time. I was living in the commune all the time. I did a first event in Santiago, Chile. I did some events in Japan. I did different things, and then I ended up also doing some groups, some courses like one or two days. And in one particular course, I really didn't know what I was going to share, because this is one of my things - I work much better in a spontaneous way than writing what I'm going to do tomorrow or studying what I'm going to do tomorrow. And so I wasn't sure what I was going to do. And I picked a book in the library with eyes closed where there were a lot of different Osho's books. And the particular book that came out was a book on Tantra about Song of Mahamudra and Tilopa, which were discourses that I had been sitting in with Osho and I absolutely adored and loved, and I had practiced all the meditations.
Swaram: What a coincidence!
Radha: {Laughter} It was pretty amazing to find myself so at ease with all this. The group was super successful, but what I realised was that one part, which was a bit missing, was to address the real sex issues and the sexual energy as the awakening power of this particular experiences that can happen during meditation. For me, what matters is that by awakening the sexual energy, you actually can have experiences which are - I would like to say a big word - cosmic. So the sexual energy, if allowed to be free, can expand in ways that are not so available to humans. But everyone can do that. Everyone can contact that. So I realised that I had to focus more on sex because people know what sex is. Everyone has this energy available. And so that's how the whole work transformed into a Tantra teaching.
Swaram: I think it's interesting to mention here that Tantra was not very popular back then. It’s thanks to Osho that Tantra has been transformed from an esoteric discipline into something associated with pleasure and physical enjoyment. In fact, Osho can be described as the creator of a new form of Tantra, the Neo-Tantra, and He has influenced almost all the teachers that are around nowadays, so much so that most of what is available today can be ascribed to Osho in a way or another. You are one of the most prominent teachers in the world of Tantra, one the most experienced, one of those few persons who can say that has learned directly from the source. How does your way of teaching differ from other Tantra schools?
Radha: Many teachers are focused mostly on the aspect of the sexual part. They also have a background as therapists, and so they see Tantra as an experience of sex which is maybe a little bit more devoid of the dark side. For me, probably the difference is that I start from meditation. For me, there is no Tantra without meditation. And that doesn't make necessarily the experience as only a vague, esoteric spiritual experience, but in every step of the way I connect the sex part as an expansion. Actually Tantra means - Tan-Tra - method to expand. So the sexual energy awakened through meditation can open the doors to this expansion. And this expansion would be in a way out of the Ego, out of the shell that we have created around the personality. So for me, of course, I am also very interested in the psychological part, but I am also very interested in an awareness that goes beyond the personality and that can only be achieved through meditation. So my groups differ in terms of meditation plus all the other parts.
Swaram: Very interesting. I think it's unique. As far as I'm aware, I haven't come across any other Tantra teacher offering this. I've done personally, some of your groups and obviously I'm biased {laughter} - they are different. They're unique. There is a depth that you can't find easily nowadays. And obviously there is your own personal experience. First, as a meditator, as a seeker, as a young lady who met a spiritual Enlightened Master, like Osho. Then you have 20 plus, 25 years experience, I guess, teaching. So your offering in terms of Tantra and meditation is outstanding. Let's talk a little bit about your school, which is called “Tantralife”. Can you talk us through the idea behind the name, which I guess also represents the concept?
Radha: If you look at many of the Tantra schools, they are not so focused on life, on what people call real life, on what people feel, you know... yes it's beautiful, I like doing that but then when I go to my life, my real life, then what? And for me, it’s very important to integrate whatever you learn… because it's more about transformation. It’s not that you learn the technique and you take it home. It's more about transforming your life and expanding - Tan-Tra is a method to expand - and bringing it into every action of your daily life. So I decided to use “Tantra-Life”. And for me the real life is a life that contains a conscious and natural sex.
Swaram: I understand. And I can vouch for that because I have attended some of your courses and groups. And thanks to the environment you create during the group, I had some mystical experiences, but at the same time, talking to you, you're very down to earth. Every time you bring people back to the present moment, you teach presence, you teach awareness in a very simple, direct and accessible way. So, I think, it’s a combination of mysticism, but also a real life, real experiences, simple, direct experience of how to integrate meditation and Tantra in day-to-day life, which makes you unique, your teachings and your school. So I think you couldn't have chosen a better word to describe your teaching “Tantralife”. It is really a perfect hat for you.
Radha: Thank you.
Swaram: Okay Radha, so what are your current projects and plans for the future, if you have any?
Radha: {Laughter} Well, I don't have necessarily a project. I keep going moment to moment into a very regular schedule that I have. I am invited in many different places, and not always I can make it everywhere, but I am at the moment offering a very beautiful training here in Italy, where I am today, and this training is the end part of a step by step way of starting for everyone. So people that are interested in the work, they will do first short events, then maybe come to a weekend with me, and then they come into the training, which is always… it’s an amazing opportunity really for sharing this. The people that I accept are people that I know already, that I have been with for a little while before, and when they and me are ready, we go into this training. All of this is international. In the last training we had people from 14 different nationalities coming. I am often now travelling to Thailand. I'm working in the East also, in Japan. In Thailand I have a Chinese clientele. I find this a beautiful experience - to open up this path to the Chinese people who haven't had a chance before. Although if you look at the roots of Tantra there is an area of Taoism that comes from China. I have worked also for 25 years in Japan and this year I go back there to do a short training. And so on and so forth. So I would not say that I have a project. As long as I can share all this, I'm happy to do it in whichever form. At the moment I have an amazing Team, friends and stuff, who are helping the work to expand, so let's see what they will create and what they have in mind for me.
Swaram: This is the project. You're traveling all over the world. You're sharing these beautiful experiences, your being and your energy. That's wonderful. So where can people find you, if they want to know more about you, your activities, or get in touch with you?
Radha: They can look at the website www.tantralife.com and they will find everything there.
Swaram: We are nearly at the end of the show. I have three final questions. What's your morning routine? How does your morning look like in the first couple of hours?
Radha: Okay. That's a fun question. I wake up quite early in the morning. I love to wake up when the birds start singing. The first thing - my first very, very important meditation is to have a cup of espresso coffee {both laugh}. It has been like this for all the years I can remember. It's also important for me to drink it in silence and to taste it {laughter}. So the coffee meditation is my first meditation {both laugh}.
Swaram: That's very inspirational, because normally people drink the coffee in the morning in a rush. They are busy, and they just gulp it, whereas it can be transformed in a wonderful meditation.
Radha: Yes, I tell you a secret: I actually carry an electric coffee machine in all my journeys, wherever I go around the world.
Swaram: Well, I know your secret because we were traveling together and I saw you and I got so inspired and now I want to do the same.
Radha: {laughter} And then I sit in silence for at least half an hour every morning. And then my morning - house taking care of and everything goes on - if I'm at home. If I'm in a group I'll probably take a look at what's going to happen next in the day of the course, training or group. And then I move on towards my work.
Swaram: The second question is: what's your favourite meditation and why?
Radha: {laughter} If I have to talk about techniques, then I would say, as an Osho technique, I practised Kundalini Meditation for 2-3 years every day, 2 years for sure every day, and 3 maybe not doing it exactly every day. Kundalini Meditation for me is a Tantric meditation because it includes different stages. And I find those stages, especially the first one… awakening the energy in the body, in the spine, allowing the snake to wake up. It's very, very important for me. The second stage, which is the dancing part. It's like you wake up all this energy and then you let all this energy settle and harmonise. I find that so beautiful. In the dancing with Osho I had many moments of No-Mind, and one exceptional spiritual experience at the very beginning of the meeting with Him. So for me dancing is important. And then watching, being silent, sitting and relaxing. So for me, Osho Kundalini is really my favourite.
Swaram: The last question is: you lived the Osho experiment. What does it mean for you personally, to be with Osho today in 2018?
Radha: {laughter} It's a very difficult question because it's hard for me to say that I'm with Osho. And it's embarrassing for me to say "I am Osho". But when you follow the path of devotion, at some point what happens is that there is no separation. Two becomes one. And if you have been totally devoted to the Master, which represents nothing else than your higher self, the day that the body is not anymore there… if you are ready, you become one with the Master. So for me, to speak about Osho the man is one thing, and to speak about Osho the higher self, the Master is another thing. And I find that in language it is very difficult to describe what I'm trying to say. For me today, in 2018, in terms of Osho, I am one with Osho. And if I see what has been recently stirred up in the press by the Netflix documentary talking about Osho - I see that {laughter} - the trick of a Master is that when he is a real Master, you can hear talking about him forever and ever. And recently this experience in 2018, is a resurrection of Osho the man to wake up other people, new people to follow somehow the search, the seeking, the transformation. So I'm so happy that this is coming up for the people who are wondering who they are today, I find that's amazing.
Swaram: Beautiful. Thank you so much, Radha.
Radha: Thank you, Swaram.
Swaram: That's the end of the show. Thank you so much for your time, for sharing so much value and I invite everyone to visit your website and getting in touch. If you're interested in meditation, if you're interested in Tantra, if you are interested in Osho, Radha is one of those few jewels who are here now and are available to share that. It's very rare.

Swaram:
Radha: C
Radha: {смех} Eсли бы мне пришлось говорить о техниках, то я бы сказалa, что в качестве техники Ошо я практиковалa Love Osho How To Use Sexual Energy For A Happier And Healthier Life with Radha Download P R E V I O U S EPISODE 2 - GROOMED TO RULE THE EMPIRE Comments (5) Love Osho Youtube channel doesn't exist.... it says... It is blocked in the EU due to trademark. Use a VPN to access it Swaran, the interviewer, a relatively new disciple interviewing Radha, an olden one. Both are of Italian origins. To hear the Radha's emotion in her voice describing her first meeting with the zen master Osho, more than 40 years ago, and the tone of her voice indicating the heart to heart relating that she experienced directly. Of course Radha on Osho vision of sensual sexuality, tantric sexuality, is very clear and natural. Sweet, sweet. Well, there's Radha! And there's Amrito or God knows Who? To listen to… Ladida! I like her nice Italian Vibrato and soulful sound, I did a group with her in the Resort-Compound- Thing-Place-whatdopeoplecallitthesedays? And it was fun, her group, what can I say? I love listening to Radha, to come to Osho so early has certainly had a profound effect on Radha and she has now so much to share.
Radha:
