Osho with Dadaji, while Mataji looks on

Mahaparinirvana Day is an annual celebration day that came into being to celebrate the anniversary of the enlightenment and leaving the body -- the same day -- of Osho's father, Sw Devateerth Bharti. By extension, it is intended to honour the passage(s) of all those who become enlightened.

The original occasion was Sep 8 1979. Sw Prem Nirvano has written about his (onlooker and celebrant-participant) experience of that time in Osho News: he saw Osho leaving Lao Tzu House in mid-afternoon -- highly unusual -- and understood he was on his way to visit his father for the last time in hospital. Bonus: Dadaji was enlightened!

The infectious air of celebration soon spread everywhere in the ashram. Many groups that were running at the time got dispensation to go down to the burning ghat to see Dadaji off, even the somewhat disciplined Vipassana group.
