Kleiden musste sich die Gemeinschaft in den roten Farben des Sonnenunterganges, um den Hals die Mala, eine Kette aus Holzperlen und dem Bild des Meisters. Grundlage seiner Lehre war die Meditation. Höchstes Ziel war "Awareness": Bewusstsein. Nur wer es schaffe, sein Ego zu überwinden und ein leeres Gefäß zu werden, der werde ein eigenverantwortlicher, mündiger Mensch. Seine Sannyasins gaben für ihn ihr bisheriges Leben auf und übertrugen häufig ihre weltlichen Besitztümer auf seine Gemeinde.
::1977 erschien erstmalig im Magazin "Stern" ein Fotobericht, der Therapiegruppen zeigte, in denen gestresste und verklemmte Zivilisationsmenschen ihre psychischen und physischen Blockaden loswerden konnten. Sie brachen sich teilweise gegenseitig die Rippen, fielen nackt übereinander her und sorgten so für ein sehr einseitiges Bild in den Medien.
::Osho traf den Zeitgeist: der Vietnamkrieg hatte die Studenten auf die Barrikaden getrieben und auf die asiatische Kultur aufmerksam gemacht. Massive Polizeieinsätze führten zu einer Eskalation der Gewalt. Die friedliche Anti-Kriegsbewegung zersplitterte. Desillusioniert wandten sich kritische Menschen vom Ziel der Veränderung der Gesellschaft ab und der Überwindung des Egos zu.
::1981 kauften die Sannyasins in der Wüste Oregons die Big Muddy Ranch und gründeten dort Rajneeshpuram, die Stadt der neuen Menschen. Diese nahm allerdings zunehmend totalitäre Züge an. Bis heute ist ungeklärt, inwieweit Osho in diese Machenschaften verwickelt war. 1985 wurde er wegen Verstoßes gegen das Immigrationsgesetz festgenommen und gegen eine Kaution von 400.000 Dollar wieder freigelassen.
