(Robert Birnbaum)

An American born in 1931, Amitabh was, among other things, a group leader in Pune One, running, among other things, the unstructured Tao group at its beginning in 1976 and later the Couples group, to help couples process obstacles in their relationships. He trained in psychology and got his PhD in California, where he ran a clinic for adolescents. He drew from all the current varieties of humanistic psychology but knew something was missing. When he heard Osho's name, that clicked, and he was in Pune in three months.

He could never manage to stay in Pune in the hot season but somehow did manage to run Geetam Rajneesh Sannyas Ashram, the "Rajneesh Meditation and Growth Institute" in the Mojave desert, an ashram set up to operate Osho's therapy groups in California while the Ranch was first being built. Rajen wrote about him (much more at homage link below), "I remember the group on the ranch that was being high-jacked by a bunch of young Australians doing their 'No worries, mate' numbers. After a few hours of their hyper-casual disregard for anything that really touched them you came up with one of your delightful loving swipes, 'You know, the trouble with you Aussies is that you accept yourselves long before you should'."

He left his body in Sep 2012.
