(Shoukichi Kina : 喜納昌吉 aka Kina Shōkichi)

Upanishad was born in 1948 in Okinawa, Japan. He is a Japanese rock musician and politician. He (喜納昌吉), along with his band Champloose (チャンプルーズ), played a large role in the Japanese home-grown "folk rock" scene in the 70s and 80s. His first big hit was Haisai Ojisan (Hey, old man) in 1972, which he wrote when he was in high school. His song Subete no Hito no Kokoro ni Hana o, as recorded by himself and others, has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide. He is now perhaps equally well known for his ongoing activism in the name of peace.

He and Champloose (40 members!) made a dramatic appearance in Pune in September 1989, putting on an extravaganza concert/dance just before Osho emerged for the first time since April 1989 (excepting a few times in July and August). Osho's re-appearance on Sept 17 began the time of White Swan Brotherhood, which soon became White Robe Brotherhood. (That concert introduced, the writer believes, the very large drums used later by Milarepa and Marco in other White Robe nights.)

Upanishad/Kina was elected a member of the House of Councillors, or Sangiin, Japan's Upper House, in July 2004 for one six-year term.
