On January 7th, 1989, the name Bhagwan was dropped and He became simply 'Shree Rajneesh'.
(Shunyo, Diamond days with Osho, ch 19)

Osho's brother Shailendra has a couple of things to add to Osho's early name changes. First, in school, he dropped the name "Jain" at the end since it was "symbolic of caste and religion". Religion obviously, but also caste because although Jains are not formally subject to Hindu customs and classifications, their rigid class system is pervasive and crosses all lines.

And Shailendra says his original name was Rajneesh Mohan Chandra Jain, ie the middle two names switched, and only in college did he adopt "Rajneesh Chandra Mohan". -- doofus-9 08:42, 23 May 2017 (UTC)
