This letter is one of a remarkable series of over 2650 letters amassed in 1983 to support Osho's attempt to get permanent resident status in the US at the time of the Oregon ranch. The image is reproduced here with the kind permission of The Oregon Historical Society. Information about their collection of these letters and other supporting material -- the "Jeffrey Noles Rajneesh Collection", named for Osho's immigration lawyer Jeffrey Noles, who compiled them in 1983 and donated them to the OHS -- can be found at this page. The wiki is grateful to the OHS for making access available for these documents. For more information and links to all the letters, see Testimonial letters.

This letter is from Arthur Sherman MD. It is "Exhibit A-197" in the Noles collection.

The text version below has been created by optical character recognition (OCR), from the images supplied by OHS. It has not been checked for errors but this process usually results in over 99% correct transcription. Most apparent "errors" are correct transcriptions of typos already in the original. The image on the right in the text box links to a pdf file of the original letter, it has one page.

ARTHUR SHERMAN, M. D.
41 PEARL STREET
KINGSTON, N. Y. 12401
Telephone 914 - 331-2870
July 20, 1983

To Whom It May Concern:

I am currently a psychiatric consultant to Ulster County's Mental Health Services, a supervising psychiatrist for the New York State Dept. of Mental Health's Community Treatment Program in Kingston, and Director of The Kingston Counseling Center, a multidisciplinary therapy group. In recent years I have taught at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and been a Visiting Professor at the City College of New York.

Since 1976, I have been a student of the teachings of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh and have had extensive contact with the man himself and his disciples, both in India and Oregon, since that time.

He is a remarkable spiritual leader who has a great deal to offer my own profession in particular. His profound psychological insights and incisive techniques of "dynamic" meditation are too little known in the West and deserve serious attention and dissemination.

My country is fortunate to have such a man upon its shores.

Yours very truly,
[signed]
Arthur Sherman, M.D.
