This letter is one of a remarkable series of over 2650 letters amassed in 1983 to support Osho's attempt to get permanent resident status in the US at the time of the Oregon ranch. The image is reproduced here with the kind permission of The Oregon Historical Society. Information about their collection of these letters and other supporting material -- the "Jeffrey Noles Rajneesh Collection", named for Osho's immigration lawyer Jeffrey Noles, who compiled them in 1983 and donated them to the OHS -- can be found at this page. The wiki is grateful to the OHS for making access available for these documents. For more information and links to all the letters, see Testimonial letters.

This letter is from Carl P. Doty. It is "Exhibit A-1244" in the Noles collection.

The text version below has been created by optical character recognition (OCR), from the images supplied by OHS. It has not been checked for errors but this process usually results in over 99% correct transcription. Most apparent "errors" are correct transcriptions of typos already in the original. The image on the right in the text box links to a pdf file of the original letter, it has 2 pages.

To whom it may concern:

My first contact with Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh happened in June of 1975, through a neighbor of mine who was coming to me on a professional basis for counseling and therapy. Initially, I brushed aside what my neighbor was attempting to present concerning Rajneesh, thinking it to be unrelated to my personal interests or my professional field of work and study.

A few months later, a collegue of mine sent me a book entitled, "The Ultimate Alchemy" by the same Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh. Upon reading the book it became immediately clear that what was being expressed was so germain to the conflicts, inner turmoils and concerns experienced in the daily life of the people coming to me for help, that further exploration into His writings and teachings was necessary in the interest of my own personal growth, my clients' needs, and the field of Human Behavior in general.

Delving further into the writings and taped discourses of Rajneesh, it became apparent at one point, that only direct experience would determine the authenticity of what Bhagwan was offering.

In April, 1976 a sabbatical was arranged through my center staff, and I departed still somewhat skeptically for Poona, India.

When I finally sat before Him to receive His "Darshan", the unconditional love, clarity and understanding that radiated from Him and was transmitted to all there, left no question that He had attained totally to what all my previous professors, masters and teachers had either cerebrally or partially attempted to impart to all their students, collegues and other lay and professional people involved in the wide range of services concerned with the field of Human Behavior. The environment surrounding Bhagwan both at His ashram in Poona, and in Oregon is living testimony to His teachings, offerings, and to life.

Having studied with and been exposed to many of the best teachers, authors, professional practioners etc. the West has to offer, and experienced thirty years of service in private, governmental, academic, experimental and experiential institutes and institutions, there is no question based upon my life’s work that the benefit of Bhagwan’s presence here in this country is unestimable both to people in my profession as well as to all who directly or indirectly come in contact with and/or receive His message, Love in whatever form. Not only would it be in contradiction to the American Constitution and all that this country stands for, it would be an incredible loss born out of prejudice and total misunderstanding of what His presence for all intelligent and caring people both here in America and throughout the world are concerned in these troubled times of uncertainty and tension should Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh be denied status as an authentic Enlightened Master by any agency connected with the American government.

If I may be of further service please feel free to contact me at the above address and/or phone number.

Yours truly,
