Information about their collection of these letters and other supporting material -- the "Jeffrey Noles Rajneesh Collection", named for Osho's immigration lawyer Jeffrey Noles, who compiled them in 1983 and donated them to the OHS -- can be found at this page. The wiki is grateful to the OHS for making access available for these documents. For more information and links to all the letters, see Testimonial letters.

This letter is from Dr. Fritz Tanner. It is "Exhibit A-584" in the Noles collection.

The text version below has been created by optical character recognition (OCR), from the images supplied by OHS. It has not been checked for errors but this process usually results in over 99% correct transcription. Most apparent "errors" are correct transcriptions of typos already in the original.

The original letter, written in German, appears first, followed by its English translation. The image on the right in the text box links to a pdf file with the whole original letter, the translation and a notary statement attesting to the validity of the translation. It has 4 pages.

As one of many people on the whole earth I address with this letter the representatives of the American public, politicians and state officials and the defenders of the law. Gentlemen! I am addressing you all to advocate that Bhagwan Dr. Shree Rajneesh be allowed permanent residency in the newly founded, officially recognized city of Rajneeshpuram in Oregon. I am writing to you as a former member of the Swiss Parliament, as a scientist, theologian, publisher and practicing psychoanalyst and psychoterapist. This intellectual background and the mentioned activities may serve as a documentation for the legitimacy and the claim for competence of my intervention. As a lecturer and author I have also scientifically analyzed numerous books on the phenomenology of religions and of psychology for more than thirty years. My personal teachers have been worldwide known experts such as Prof. Dr. Carl Barth, Prof. Dr. Emil Brunner and Prof. Dr. C.G. Jung. From this and from my own spiritual development I can allow myself the judgement that Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh is an especially outstanding personality in cultural and spiritual realms of the present time. I even go as far as to state that he is the greatest living exponent of a process of harmonization of East and West, of spirituality and intellect who will be mentioned in the history of mankind, having already during his lifetime realized a humanistic and religious synthesis of historical significance. A country like the United States of America which is rightfully proud of her democratic tradition and her interpretation :of the rights for freedom and individuality should be proud too, to accommodate one of the most important contemporary human beings, Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh. Not only is he a spiritual Master and religious leader of superb and unique quality; he also shows an outstanding scientific standard, and, furthermore, he is an extraordinary poet, a poet in the most noble and deep meaning of the word. Since the United States have taken it as a great honour to accept an Alexander Solschenizin as a guest, Dr. Shree Rajneesh should deserve at least the same honour. I am convinced., together with hundreds of thousands of people who know him like I do from a personal meeting and through his publications, that your country has this singular opportunity to honour a human being of epochal signifiance, a giant among people, by offering him a permanent residence. We can only hope, Gentlemen, and kindly invite you to be aware of this historical chance. Realizing it would also mean a further glory to the United States worldwide.

You have the great opportunity. Also the generations to come will thank you should you make use of it.
