This letter is one of a remarkable series of over 2650 letters amassed in 1983 to support Osho's attempt to get permanent resident status in the US at the time of the Oregon ranch. The image is reproduced here with the kind permission of The Oregon Historical Society. Information about their collection of these letters and other supporting material -- the "Jeffrey Noles Rajneesh Collection", named for Osho's immigration lawyer Jeffrey Noles, who compiled them in 1983 and donated them to the OHS -- can be found at this page. The wiki is grateful to the OHS for making access available for these documents. For more information and links to all the letters, see Testimonial letters.

This letter is from Dr. Hannes Vogel. It is "Exhibit A-940" in the Noles collection.

The text version below has been created by optical character recognition (OCR), from the images supplied by OHS. It has not been checked for errors but this process usually results in over 99% correct transcription. Most apparent "errors" are correct transcriptions of typos already in the original.

The original letter, written in German, appears first, followed by its English translation. The image on the right in the text box links to a pdf file with the whole original letter, the translation and a notary statement attesting to the validity of the translation. It has 4 pages.

Sehr geehrte Herren,

General practitioner
Rankweil, July 20, 1983

Dear Sirs,

as I recently have heard, you intend to deny a man from India called Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh a residence permit for America.

I live in Austria as a general practitioner and have been more or less daily caring for sick people. I origin from an upright Catholic family, my father was a teacher, my brother is a G.P. as well, my sister is studying paedagogics and psychology, whereas my elder sister is married to an American who is teaching music at our schools here.

During my eight college years I was representing my form, and repeatedly I was head-boy. Since my early adolescence I have been studying philosophy, literature and religious sciences, having a close connection to Goethe, Nietzsche and Kierkegaard, until one day I more or less accidentally stumbled on Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh.

I was deeply touched by the intensity and the radical approach in this man's thinking, of whom I had never heard before.

Many of his sayings were so new and revolutionary, but at the same time of such a far-sightedness, clarity and love, that in the beginning I had great difficulties to understand and to digest all of it. Having read not only one, but several of the many hundreds of Bhagwan's books by now, I set out to reconsider what Jesus Christ must have said nearly two thousand years ago to be executed and killed as a still young man. May God save you from repeating today, two thousand years later, perhaps the same mistake by creating a situation, in continuously refusing to grant this truly exceptional religious man the permission to stay, whose impacts nobody of us can foresee.

I ask you with all my heart to consider my words and to tolerate this man Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh by granting him a residence permit in the desert-lands of Oregon.

With most kind regards I remain Yours
Dr. Hannes Vogel
