This letter is one of a remarkable series of over 2650 letters amassed in 1983 to support Osho's attempt to get permanent resident status in the US at the time of the Oregon ranch. The image is reproduced here with the kind permission of The Oregon Historical Society. Information about their collection of these letters and other supporting material -- the "Jeffrey Noles Rajneesh Collection", named for Osho's immigration lawyer Jeffrey Noles, who compiled them in 1983 and donated them to the OHS -- can be found at this page. The wiki is grateful to the OHS for making access available for these documents. For more information and links to all the letters, see Testimonial letters.

This letter is from Raju Ramanathan. It is "Exhibit A-135" in the Noles collection.

The text version below has been created by optical character recognition (OCR), from the images supplied by OHS. It has not been checked for errors but this process usually results in over 99% correct transcription. Most apparent "errors" are correct transcriptions of typos already in the original. The image on the right in the text box links to a pdf file of the original letter, it has 2 pages.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN

I, Raju Ramanathan, am a Canadian citizen and a professional engineer registered in the Province of Ontario and also certified to practice as quality engineer in USA by The American Society for Quality Control, Milwaukee, U.S.A. I have a master’s degree in aerospace instrumentation from India supplemented by several specialization diplomas in the field of Quality Assurance from Canadian educational institutions.

Presently, I am working as a Reliability Engineer for Rockwell International, Collins Canada Division and as is well known, Rockwell is the prime contractor for NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration-U.S.A.) and has the success story of sending the first man to the moon and the first space shuttle in the orbit.

During the last 12 years of my professional career, I have worked in several Rocket Launching facilities around the world - specifically with NASA scientists, and my research work has been in the field of design support and design qualification of systems used directly or indirectly by the Astronauts. This is a complex and multi-dimensional field and has led me to gain expertise on human engineering - a burgeoning new field involving study of man machine interface, adaptation to environmental extremes, etc. and sometimes cognitive neurology and psychophysiology.

It was during this time that I realized that both pure physics and psychology are facing a blind alley and further growth has to take place in a totally, new direction. This became both a professional question and a deep personal quest.

Accidentally in 1976, I heard a tape recorded lecture of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh brought from India by a fellow scientist and Bhagwan's words which were like fresh breeze, opened up new vistas in my scientific perspectives on Man and His Universe. Since then, I have read almost all of the published works of Bhagwan's speeches. I also met Bhagwan in Dharshan in Aug. 1980 and I have met him in Dharshan in the ranch at Rajneeshpuran Oregon in June 1983. I find that every encounter with Bhagwan is perpetually stimulating, frequently challenging and painfully humbling and has affected me and my work in a positive way. It is as if I come up with a new discovery in science every time I get a glimpse of him.

With all this background, I can aver with all the power at my command that listening to Bhagwan or even being in perfect openness and attunement with him (even in silence) - is like looking at the whole of psychology through a wide angle lens. Bhagwan is undoubtedly an outstanding person of exceptional ability in his insights into both psychology of science and science of psychology and his vision and clarity of perception is definitely needed to create the psychology of the future - the transhuman psychology which many modern scientists and psychologists are struggling to give birth to. Bhagwan has already put psychology on a new foundation partly through his teachings and more through his very being and living. Bhagwan is a teacher of teachers, he has transformed so many individual scientists and psychologists and is already reshaping the future of science and psychology to grow more holistic and humanistic.

I am positive that Bhagwan's work will contribute to everyone in a positive way and I could go as far as to say that but for Bhagwan's guidance, science/psychology is destined to live either in an ivory tower or on the backwards of the psychiatric hospital.
