This letter is one of a remarkable series of over 2650 letters amassed in 1983 to support Osho's attempt to get permanent resident status in the US at the time of the Oregon ranch. The image is reproduced here with the kind permission of The Oregon Historical Society. Information about their collection of these letters and other supporting material -- the "Jeffrey Noles Rajneesh Collection", named for Osho's immigration lawyer Jeffrey Noles, who compiled them in 1983 and donated them to the OHS -- can be found at this page. The wiki is grateful to the OHS for making access available for these documents. For more information and links to all the letters, see Testimonial letters.

This letter is from Richard Grunke. It is "Exhibit A-325" in the Noles collection.

The text version below has been created by optical character recognition (OCR), from the images supplied by OHS. It has not been checked for errors but this process usually results in over 99% correct transcription. Most apparent "errors" are correct transcriptions of typos already in the original. The image on the right in the text box links to a pdf file of the original letter, it has one page.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN

I’ve been working in the area of astronautics and aeronautics for 16 years.

From 1967 - 1969 I was trained by the West-German Air Force as an airplane mechanic.

1969 - 1973 Studied airplane construction at the technical college in Munich, graduated with an engineering degree (Dipl.Ing).

1973 - 1978 Application of advanced ceramics in automotive gas turbines (research program of the German indsutry). During that time: 6 internationally patented inventions Article: Ceramics as material for combustion chambers of automotive gas turbines (Zeitschrift fUr Werkstofftechnik, 1978).

Since 1978 I'm running an engineering office for astronautics and aeronautics . During this time I developed new methods for the production of materials under zero-g- conditions in space (two internationally patented inventions). These methods are being tested in winter 1983/1984 as part of the space-lab program in space. A further important part of my work is damage investigations on airplane jet engines.

Through an article in the magazine "Der Spiegel" I became aware of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh in 1980. I started to read his books and discovered a man who could give the answer to a central question of our times - as a philosopher, a mystic, a religious teacher - the question about the responsibility of the scientist. Every new research result, every invention, can be of use for improvement or damage of humanity. I received a decisive impulse by Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh: Only if the consciousness of a scientist develops as fast as the scientifical and technical progress, can he serve humanity. If the consciousness doesn't develop, technique and science will destroy humanity.

For the scientist the solution of this problem doesn't concur with renouncing the world so as to not make his hands dirty, he has to develop his ability to love, to change his consciousness.

The philosopher Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh answers the questions of this time as a religious teacher. In both areas this man counts to the big ones in the history of humanity.
