This letter is one of a remarkable series of over 2650 letters amassed in 1983 to support Osho's attempt to get permanent resident status in the US at the time of the Oregon ranch. The image is reproduced here with the kind permission of The Oregon Historical Society. Information about their collection of these letters and other supporting material -- the "Jeffrey Noles Rajneesh Collection", named for Osho's immigration lawyer Jeffrey Noles, who compiled them in 1983 and donated them to the OHS -- can be found at this page. The wiki is grateful to the OHS for making access available for these documents. For more information and links to all the letters, see Testimonial letters.

This letter is from Sw Chaitanya Sagar. It is "Exhibit A-757" in the Noles collection.

The text version below has been created by optical character recognition (OCR), from the images supplied by OHS. It has not been checked for errors but this process usually results in over 99% correct transcription. Most apparent "errors" are correct transcriptions of typos already in the original. The image on the right in the text box links to a pdf file of the original letter, it has 3 pages.

To whom it may concern

I am writing in support of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh whom I consider to be the greatest living human being that is walking on this earth at this time.

As an ex-member of the Sunday Times of London it has been my privilege to meet with many influential and well-known personalities over the years. However, none of these celebrities can in any way match the outstanding qualities which I have come to admire in Bhagwan, the philosophermystic of this century.

My work as a travelling writer first brought me into contact with this extraordinary man in India while on a world tour of existing schools of meditation and mysticism. After our first meeting, now dating back more then ten years, I realised immediately that sooner or later Bhagwan’s profound understanding of human nature, his deep insight into our contemporary neurosis and its causes and cures would become the basis of a new religion that would usher in an era of what Bhagwan has called "the new man".

Subsequent meetings over the years and a deeper involvement with his teachings have confirmed to me again and again that a Master lives among us once more of the stature of Christ, Buddha and Lao Tsu, to name but a few of the spiritual giants that have graced past ages with their enlightened wisdom and compassion.

It is true to say that all masters have been surrounded by lifelong controversies, and I am not at all surprised that this is again the case with Bhagwan. He is a man of the Truth who speaks whatsoever has to be said, regardless of the cost. Judging by the large number of his intelligent and well-qualified disciples, it seems that those to whom he is speaking are hearing him, even if the larger public have not heard him yet or do not wish to hear him.

His thousands of discourses are of such intrinsic value, portraying his innermost knowledge in a precise vision when normally such matters can only be conveyed in the subtle silence that exists between a Master and his disciples, that they themselves stand as abundant proof of his literary genius.

The range of Bhagwan’s subject matters is so comprehensive and covers such a wide spectrum of religious and spiritual disciplines, both from the East and the West that, put together, the total collection of books and tapes comprise an entire academic department that will, I am certain, be studied and meditated on by future scholars.

The depths of Bhagwan’s scientific knowledge in the field of psychology is already legendary in many circles. Whilst some feel that Bhagwan is somewhat ahead of his time, most everyone is agreed that a new approach is needed if humanity is to survive, and that Bhagwan’s message about the state of our minds and that of society at large is pointing the way towards a breakthrough.

Much of what Bhagwan has spoken of in India takes time to assimilate. During the past two years an energy field has evolved at Rajneeshpuram around the silent presence of Bhagwan in which such assimilation has become possible. Called a Buddhafield, it is a phenomenon in which through the Master a personal transformation for the individual has not only become available, but is now a natural by-product of participation in everyday life.

Personally, I can say with utmost gratitude in my heart that Bhagwan has given me a new opportunity to be a human being in the real sense of the word, not merely being born and raised into our conditioned society, but one who has become a more conscious person with a commitment towards feeling, loving and celebrating that which we call life.

Bhagwan’s new expression of man as a total being - rather than the partial and divided one he is at present - will come about if allowed to do so without the current hindrance and bigotry. In fact, in spite of all obstacles, it is already happening in many centres of the world. I believe the momentum has now been created as the time for radical change is right.

In the meantime, Bhagwan’s immense presence, his compassion for our difficulties and shortcomings, together with the essence of his teachings are transcending his silence, and, for those who have the right ears to hear the silence and understand the message, it is a transforming experience which is changing their lives around the world.

Any country should feel honoured and indebted to count Bhagwan as one of its citizens.

Yours
