A documentary from German public broadcaster Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen (ZDF), in the TV magazine "hallo deutschland". The tabloid magazine presents emotional stories about people in Germany and around the world. This documentary was broadcasted on December 12, 2016, 17:10 in remembrance of Osho’s virtual 85th birthday.
The moderation is – typically for german ZDF – mainly critically and there are a few exaggerations and inaccuracies (esp.: Bhagwan asked for all the books Sheela had produced about the so-called ‘Rajneeshism’ to be burned at the crematorium. His own books were of course never burned.) Video shows also quite a few footage of Osho’s life, the first Poona commune time and a few interviews with Sannyasins, although they are known from other reports already. It has scenes from building up Rajneeshpuram, Osho’s drive by and his final deportation from USA too.

    Bhagwan, ein Philosoph aus Indien zog ab den 70er Jahren hunderttausende Menschen in seinen Bann. Für die einen ein gefährlicher Guru, für andere der Erlöser. Vor 85 Jahren wurde er geboren. Anlass für uns, die weltweite Bewegung unter dem mittlerweile verstorbenen Prediger mal unter die Lupe zu nehmen.

    In the beginning of the 70s Bhagwan, a philosopher from India, pulled hundreds of thousands of people under his spell. For some he was a dangerous guru, for others a saviour. He was born 85 years ago. For this reason we will examine the worldwide movement of the late preacher.

    Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, an Indian, a professor of philosophy, a guru. Since the middle of the 1970s thousands of Germans have been on a pilgrimage to Poona/India. The postwar generation is in search for meaning. And many believe that they have found their salvation in Bhagwan.

Ich hab mich selbst und das alles … alles was so passiert und mit Erfolg und Karriere zu tun hat am Anfang oder früher, sehr sehr wichtig genommen, Titel etc. Und den Zahn, dadurch, dass ich auch relativ jung war, als ich dort war, hab ich mir da auch relativ jung ziehen lassen.“

    "In fact the time with Bhagwan brought me a great calmness. I did take myself seriously and all that ... all that which was happening connected with success and career, I did take that very very seriously in the beginning or earlier on, titles and so on. And that tooth, because I was relatively young when I was there, that tooth was pulled at a relatively young age."

Er provoziert und propagiert Lust am Leben, freie Liebe, aber auch Kapitalismus. Und gewinnt immer mehr Anhänger aus dem Westen trotz offensichtlicher Widersprüchlichkeiten.

    In the end of the 1960s the charismatic professor of philosophy gathers his first disciples, in the beginning mainly Indians. He provokes and propagates joy of living, free love, but also capitalism. And he gathers more and more disciples from the West in spite of apparent contradictions.

Aber wir können einen armen Mann reich machen. Das hat aber nichts mit Geld zu tun. Reichtum ist für mich nicht Äusserlichkeit, nichts Materielles. Wenn wir innere Zufriedenheit, Friede, Glück und ein Leben voller Freude als Reichtum betrachten, dann kann meine Lehre die Menschen reich machen.“

    [Osho's words are from the database.] „It is not an economic movement; it is a religious movement. Religion and meditation cannot help to make a poor country rich in any way. It cannot. But it can help a poor man to be rich -- in a very noneconomic sense. If riches only mean the outward thing then religion is absolutely irrelevant, but if you think in terms of inner consciousness, peace, a blissful attitude, a life lived as an inner celebration, then it can help.“

    2:43 Reich wird vor allem Bhagwan selbst. 1974 gründet er in Poona seinen Ashram, sein Meditationszentrum. Der Eintritt kostet rund drei Euro, die täglichen Vorträge des Meisters das doppelte, Therapien bis zu hundert Euro. Ohne Geld keine Ekstase. Wer ihm begegnen will, muss parfümfrei sein. Bhagwan leidet unter Allergien. Seine Jünger stört keine Laune ihres Meisters.

    Bhagwan himself gets rich before all others. In 1974 he establishes his ashram in Poona, his centre for meditation. The entrance fee is about three Euros, the daily discourses of the master cost double, therapies up to a hundred Euros. Without money, no ecstasy. Whoever wants to meet him has to be free of perfume. Bhagwan suffers from allergies. His disciples are not disturbed by any whim of their master.

    3:48 Tausende Europäer strömen bis Anfang der 1980er ins freizügige Poona. Lieben, meditieren, therapieren. Nur wenige finden Unterkunft und Arbeit im Ashram. Der grosse Rest sucht nach billigen Zimmern in der Stadt oder sogar noch weniger mangels Geld.

    Thousands of Europeans stream to the uninhibited Poona until the beginning of the 1980s. Loving, meditating, doing therapies. Only a few find accommodation and work inside the ashram. The vast majority are searching for cheap rooms in the city or even less than that due to lack of money.

    4:25 1981 das vorläufige Aus für Poona. Die Sannyasins kommen zurück nach Deutschland. Bhagwan hat sich wegen Steuerschulden in die USA abgesetzt. Für seine Schüler ganz offensichtlich kein Problem.

    In 1981 sees the end of Poona for the time being. The sannyasins come back to Germany. Because of tax dues Bhagwan absconds to the USA. Obviously no problem for his disciples.

    4:38 „Ah ich würd sagen, Bhagwan ist immer da, er ist … man kann nicht sagen ohne Bhagwan, weil für mich ist egal, ob er da ist oder da. Er ist irgendwie in mir drin.“

Irgendein Glück, oder Liebe, oder irgend so etwas. Ich hab nie genau gewusst, was es ist. Und ich bin hierher gekommen und hab gespürt, das ist der richtige Platz, an dem ich sein will.“

    "For me my life has radically changed since I have been living here. When I previously lived outside before I always had the feeling something is missing, something essential is missing. Some kind of happiness, or love, something like that. I never knew exactly what it was. And I came here and I felt this is the right place where I want to be."

    5:26 „Alles, was ich da mach, arbeiten, leben, Freizeit, essen, tanzen, schmusen, Sex, dass ich so ziemlich alles mit Freude machen kann. Mir macht einfach alles Spass. Das lernst da, dass dir das Leben Spass macht.“

    "All that I am doing here, working, living, free time, eating, dancing, cuddling, sex: I can do almost anything with joy. I enjoy everything. That is what you learn here, that you can enjoy life."

    5:40 Mit den Sannyasins kommt nicht nur der Spass am Leben, sondern kommen auch Yoga und fernöstliche Meditationen nach Deutschland. Immer unter den Augen des Erleuchteten.

    With the sannyasins not only the joy of living comes to Germany but also yoga and far Eastern meditations. Always overseen by the eyes of the enlightened one.

    5:51 Und während sich in Deutschland in den 80ern die Sannyasins neu orientieren, baut Bhagwan in Oregon eine zweite Gemeinde auf. Er ist also wieder da, der Meister. Täglich gibt er sich in einem seiner vielen Rolls Royce die Ehre, drive by genannt. Das muss seinen Schülern über Jahre genügen. Bhagwan befindet sich in einer Schweigephase.

    And while in the 80s the sannyasins in Germany seek a new orientation Bhagwan establishes a second community in Oregon. The master is back again. Every day he presents himself in one of his many Rolls Royces. This is called drive by. For years this has to be sufficient for his disciples. Bhagwan is in a silent phase.

    6:14 „Das war eins der tollsten Erlebnisse von mir auf der Ranch, als wirklich der Rolls Royce kaputt gegangen ist knapp 50 Meter vor meinem Standort an der Strasse und Bhagwan dann ausgestiegen ist und alle haben gefeiert um ihn herum. Er ist dann so dagestanden und wir standen aussen herum und haben uns gefreut. Danach sind wir wieder zum Badesee zurückgegangen.“

    "This was one of the most fantastic experiences on the ranch for me as the Rolls Royce actually broke down about 50 meters away from where I stood. Then Bhagwan got out and everyone celebrated around him. He simply stood there and we stood around him and enjoyed it. Afterwards we went back to swimming in the lake."

    6:40 Die Zeit in Oregon, es ist eine Zeit der Partys, Festivals, aber auch der Korruption durch sein Management. 1984 beschliesst Bhagwan wieder zu seinen Schülern zu sprechen. Ein Scharlatan?

    The time in Oregon is a time of parties, festivals, but also of corruption by the management. In 1984 Bhagwan decides to talk to his disciples again. A charlatan?

    6:54 „Er war natürlich auch ein Clown. Er hat Witze gemacht, er hat sich widersprochen, er war so wie eine shakespearscher Narr, der der Gesellschaft so den Spiegel vorhält, damit sie ihre auch hässliche Fratze sieht.“

    "Of course he was also a clown. He made jokes, he contradicted himself, he was like a Shakespearean fool who holds the mirror for the society so that it also sees its ugly expression."

    7:11 1985 schliesslich macht Bhagwan selbst dem Spuk um ihn ein Ende. Demonstrativ und symbolisch lässt er seine Bücher öffentlich verbrennen. Auch dies unter dem Jubel seiner Anhänger. Die lachen selbst noch, als er das Ende seiner Religion erklärt.

    In 1985 Bhagwan ends the spectacle around him. Ostentatiously and symbolically he allows his books to be burned in public. This is also cheered on by his followers. They still laugh as he declares the end of his religion.

    7:44 Im gleichen Jahr wird Bhagwan aus den USA abgeschoben, unter den Tränen seiner Schüler. Nach langer Irrfahrt kehrt er zurück nach Poona. 1990 stirbt er im Alter von 59 Jahren als höchst umstrittener Mensch, von dem jedoch bis heute viele Schüler sagen, er hat mir gut getan.“

    In the same year Bhagwan gets deported from the USA amidst the tears of his disciples. After a long odyssey he returns to Poona. In 1990 he dies in the age of 59 as a most controversial man. But even today many of his disciples say he did me good.)
