notes
Title is part of a Sanskrit chant/prayer, from the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, that goes:
असतो मा साद गमय, तमसो मा ज्योतिर् गमय, मृत्योर मा अमृतम् गमय
(Asato Ma Sad Gamaya, Tamaso Ma Jyotir Gamaya, Mrityor Ma Amritam Gamaya)
Lead us from ignorance to truth, Lead us from darkness to light, Lead us from death to deathlessness.
Thus Asato can in a narrow sense be said to be a companion volume to Mrityorma Amritam Gamaya (मृत्योर्मा अमृतं गमय) and Tamso Ma Jyotirgamaya (तमसो मा ज्योतिर्गमय), though they are thematically very different.
This volume does not consist of original talks but is a compilation, of Nirvan Upanishad (निर्वाण उपनिषद) and Ishavashya Upanishad (ईशावास्य उपनिषद), talks for which were given in 1971. See discussion for more on this.
