Letter written on 22 Dec 1961

This is one of hundreds of letters Osho wrote to Ma Anandmayee, then known as Madan Kunwar Parakh. It was written on 22nd December 1961. The letterhead has a simple "रजनीश" (Rajneesh) in the top left area, in a heavy but florid font, and "115, Napier Town, Jabalpur (M.P.) in the top right, in a lighter but still somewhat florid font.

Osho's salutation in this letter is a simple "मां", Maan, Mom or Mother. It has a couple of the hand-written marks that have been observed in other letters: a blue number (44) in a circle in the top right corner and a second, pale and mirror-image number (69) in the bottom right corner, but no red tick mark.

रजनीश ११५, नेपियर टाउन जबलपुर (म. प्र.) प्रिय मां, दोपहर जाने को है। धूप हट गई है और सूरज पश्चिम में पहुँच रहा है। एक दिन और समाप्त हुआ : ऐसे ही बूंद-बूंद बहकर जीवन की गागर रीत जाती है। दिवस-रात्रि जाते देखता हूँ और सोचता हूँ कितने जीवन यूं ही बेहोशी में बीत जाते हैं। वह होश का क्षण आ ही नहीं पाता है जिसके लिए कि प्रतीक्षा है और मृत्यु द्वार आजाती है। एक परदेशी युवक घर खोजते-खोजते कल संध्या आये थे। पूछ रहे थे कि जीवन का उपयोग किस दिशा में करूँ कि बाद में पछताना न हो? मैंने कहा कि ऐसा ही प्रश्न हजरत अली ने अरब के पैगम्बर मुहम्मद से पूछा था : मुहम्मद ने जो कहा था वही मैं कहता हूँ। उन्होंने कहा था : “स्व को जान लो।“ यह स्व को जानना ही बस करने जैसा पुरुषार्थ है। पुरुषार्थ का अर्थ भी यही है। वह जो भीतर बैठा है (पुरुष) उसे जानना ही जीवन का अर्थ पालेना है। इस पुरुष को जाने बिना जीवन भी मृत्यु है और इसे जान लेने पर मृत्यु भी जीवन हो जाती है।“ जीवन की घड़ी-पल सब अमूल्य हैं; कारण; अमूल्य को पाने का वह अवसर है। २२ दिस. १९६१ रजनीश के प्रणाम
