Healing into the Heart of Death
- Death is gradually coming out of the shadows in our culture into an increasingly conscious process. When I was growing up there were only a few options, all of which involved minimal contact with the dying person before, during, and after the passage. The pain and grief were intensified because of this distance and lack of understanding. A shocking experience changed all of that the first time I saw a body burn in broad daylight to music and a long celebration. Finally a new perspective was brought to light by a spiritual teacher who explained the process in an enlightened way. Since then, daring to come closer and closer to the entire range of experience in this delicate process unveiled the depth and beauty within it that would have been completely missed without the 'initiations' to a radically different view in India that were later applied to transitions at home. The stories were too beautiful, transformative, and moving not to share them, culminating with the recent passing of my daughter's cat. It had such striking similarities to the other human transitions that I could no longer really just see her as a cat! What would have normally been an extended grieving process was shortened immensely and felt more like a healing for all involved, largely because we included something larger than life that intimately embraced us all.
