- notes
- Title is part of a Sanskrit chant/prayer, from the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, that goes:
- असतो मा साद गमय, तमसो मा ज्योतिर् गमय, मृत्योर मा अमृतम् गमय
- (Asato Ma Sad Gamaya, Tamaso Ma Jyotir Gamaya, Mrityor Ma Amritam Gamaya)
- Lead us from ignorance to truth, Lead us from darkness to light, Lead us from death to deathlessness.
- Thus Asato can in a narrow sense be said to be a companion volume to Mrityorma Amritam Gamaya (मृत्योर्मा अमृतं गमय) and Tamso Ma Jyotirgamaya (तमसो मा ज्योतिर्गमय), though they are thematically very different.
- This volume does not consist of original talks but is a compilation, of Nirvan Upanishad (निर्वाण उपनिषद) and Ishavashya Upanishad (ईशावास्य उपनिषद), talks for which were given in 1971. See discussion for more on this.
