People of Deutschland

Dass Deutschland ein Land ist, das von Vielfalt geprägt wird, ist unbestreitbar. Und dennoch erleben Eingewanderte und ihre Nachkommen täglich Ablehnung und Benachteiligung, sei es auf der Suche nach einer Wohnung, bei Bewerbungsgesprächen oder bei der Fahrscheinkontrolle. Es ist schockierend, wie stark Rassismus immer noch den deutschen Alltag durchzieht. Gleichzeitig sind solche Erfahrungen schwer nachzuempfinden, wenn man sie nicht selbst erlebt hat. Umso wichtiger ist es, Geschichten Betroffener zu erzählen, um die Gesellschaft zu sensibilisieren und Veränderung möglich zu machen.

In »People of Deutschland« versammeln Martina Rink und Simon Usifo Stimmen zum Thema Rassismus in Deutschland. Persönlichkeiten aus Bereichen wie Mode, Sport, Medien, Wirtschaft und Kunst teilen authentisch sowie berührend ihre Erfahrungen und erzählen, wie es ist, heute als Person of Color oder Person mit sichtbarem Migrationshintergrund in Deutschland zu leben. Die persönlichen Geschichten geben Einblicke in die gesellschaftliche Vielfalt dieses Landes und machen Mut, Alltagsrassismus entgegenzutreten. Ergänzt werden die Texte durch die atemberaubenden Porträts des Fotografen Sammy Hart.

Simon Usifo:

“Till today people with a migration background encounter racism and discrimination in Germany. It’s very easy for this to remain unnoticed to those who are not affected. With our book People of Deutschland, Martina Rink and I have tried to provide a stage for 45 people and 45 stories about everyday racism and how we want to help change our country. The stories can range from micro-aggressions and unconscious bias, to a mother who is losing her son in an extreme right-wing attack in Hanau.

Still, this is an optimistic book. No one encapsulates better the resilience, the tremendous potential for a strong, pluralistic and unified Germany, as our 45 guest authors. They are remarkable personalities coming from the world of music, fashion, creativity, sports, film, politics, journalism, and business. Together we are raising awareness for an issue we can only resolve together as a society.
