This letter is one of a remarkable series of over 2650 letters amassed in 1983 to support Osho's attempt to get permanent resident status in the US at the time of the Oregon ranch. The image is reproduced here with the kind permission of The Oregon Historical Society. Information about their collection of these letters and other supporting material -- the "Jeffrey Noles Rajneesh Collection", named for Osho's immigration lawyer Jeffrey Noles, who compiled them in 1983 and donated them to the OHS -- can be found at this page. The wiki is grateful to the OHS for making access available for these documents. For more information and links to all the letters, see Testimonial letters.

This letter is from Christopher R. Brown. It is "Exhibit A-1774" in the Noles collection.

The text version below has been created by optical character recognition (OCR), from the images supplied by OHS. It has not been checked for errors but this process usually results in over 99% correct transcription. Most apparent "errors" are correct transcriptions of typos already in the original. The image on the right in the text box links to a pdf file of the original letter, it has one page.

To Whom It May Concern:

My name is Christopher Brown and I am writing to express my feeling about a man who has had a profound effect on my life. I am speaking of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, the spiritual leader who is now in silence. I first learned about his spiritual work through books, which led me to explore his meditations and practice his philosophy. The more I read and learned, the more relaxed my life became. I became less tense, happier and more loving; in ether words, his magic was working and I had never even seen the man in person. As my life was becoming more positive, the next logical step was to become a disciple. I took sannyas, the Indian word, and became a disciple or Rajneeshee in September, 1981, while Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh was in silence.

After I became a disciple, I began to understand his silence more clearly and began to feel an immense love flowing from him. On September 28, 1982, I saw him for the first time. The feeling was like one I had never known before. It was subtle and sweet; I felt such a deep peace that tears started flowing and I continued to cry for the next five minutes. Something was communicated to me from Bhagwan and it was far more powerful than words.

My purpose in writing to you is to explain that Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh has improved the quality of my teaching and counseling work, improved my relationships with my family and friends; and I feel more peaceful, relaxed and meditative. My love and respect for Bhagwan in no way depends upon whether he ever speaks again. Words have always been inadequate to express the beyond.

Sincerely yours,
[signed]
