- Nina Tolhurst yearns to return to India. Born in Calcutta but repatriated to England as a young woman, Nina soon marries an Indian lawyer in London. With his promise to eventually join her, Nina travels alone to his family estate in Assam. The night of her arrival she falls asleep exhausted and dreams someone is lying next to her. She is not dreaming. Trapped in a hostile and sexually dangerous environment, Nina must relinquish all but a small measure of her independence. Obsessed with a culture whose traditions find her utterly unsuitable, she becomes the 'Indian wife' turning a blind eye to the betrayals that threaten not only her but the next generation. When more shocking secrets from the past test her sanity, Nina must summon all her resilience to live the life she has found, not the one she was looking for.
