As mentioned, this "Master's Day" at the ranch was the beginning of a shift to a new modality. Guru Purnima is a traditional day of festivities in India to honour the Guru, occurring always on the full moon in July. It was one of the few Indian traditional forms to survive Osho's radical reformation of sannyas somewhat intact. In 1982, it was indeed on the full moon but in the following years it stayed fixed on Jul 6, irrespective of the moon, under the new name of Master's Day.

Why this change occurred is a matter of speculation. Plausible possibilities include:

  1. It was time to "Westernize" even more than in India, so this Indian form had to go.
  2. It was a completely arbitrary change by Sheela, a part of making her mark.
  3. It was noticed that its proximity to the big-deal American holiday Jul 4 made it easier for sannyasins everywhere to get through immigration and customs checks than at slower times, so it was kept there.
  4. Your guess here.
