Introduction

Skip to the "Update" section below if you have read this intro, which has been rendered partially obsolete by the acquisition of significant info for the Feb 1980 period.

In Feb and Mar of 1980, Osho came out to see people in darshan as he usually did before and after this period but the record of these two months' worth of darshans has got scrambled in an unprecedented way in the CD-ROM, which is unfortunately the only "official" record we have.

The two "books" involved are If You Choose to Be with Me, You Must Risk Finding Yourself and Fingers Pointing to the Moon, covering the darshans in Feb and Mar 1980 respectively. "Books" is in quote marks because they were never actually published; only edited transcripts are available, and those only in the CD-ROM. And they have been butchered.

A lot of information has been lost, and we don't even know how much. What has happened is that the CD-ROM's edited transcripts are associated with dates that cannot be possible, so actual dates have to be considered unknown. And how much the talks have been cut and edited is also unknown. The CD-ROM's date structure is specifically this:

All the sannyas talks given in Feb, for all 29 nights, have been put -- we have to assume arbitrarily -- into ten chapters. These ten chapters have been assigned dates by the CD-ROM, but most of these dates are wrong, though we can't know which ones are right and which wrong, or what correspondence there might be, if any.

The wiki has compiled lists of every name we could find in these two books but many more people were taking sannyas than the total of only 36 names for the whole month of Feb suggests. Our estimate for Feb is 213. The counts for the similarly afflicted Mar collection are 30 and 241. Where do these estimates come from?

There are some clues in the layout of Osho's words in the CD-ROM for these two months. Most paragraphs are separated only by a carriage return. Every so often (approx every 2-7 paragraphs), they are separated by more than that, by a line of space. At the same time as this extra separation occurs, Osho's words change direction, there is a different theme, a different message. This strongly suggests that the extra spaces demarcate one new sannyasin's words from the next. And in some of the chapters of Fingers, there are even more obvious demarcations, a few words in all-CAPS about the new name, followed by a few paragraphs.

These indications give us a strikingly different count, and a good estimate of how many names have been omitted. These spaces are not absolute guidelines, and in some cases, there seems to be a continuity in Osho's message before and after the space, and so the spaces in these cases have not been counted as separative.

The two tables below are what we know about who took sannyas when in these two months. The first is all the info we could wring out of the CD-ROM, the second such individual names and dates info that has trickled in. If you or a friend took sannyas in these two months, please write to let us know.

Update

A correspondent has sent a list of what purports to be all those taking sannyas in Feb 1980, with names, their meanings and dates. There are 228 entries in that collection, compared to the 213 we estimated earlier. We cannot verify this info but it has all but one of the names found in the CD-ROM's version of If You Choose and has the ring of truth and so will be adopted provisionally.

One does not have to look deeply to see that the arrangement of If You Choose's chapters bears no relation to the sannyas dates found in our correspondent's offering. The organizing principle of this never-published book seems to have been a broadly thematic one, judging by titles assigned to eight of its ten chapters in the CD-ROM: "Truth", "Prayer", "Music" and so on. These titles appear to be a way to sort Osho's words to these new disciples into categories, but not all fit comfortably into that model, and two chapters have no titles. Perhaps they are Miscellaneous?

Fingers' seven chapter titles are more fluid, "Allowing", "Sharing", "Celebrating", etc, and perhaps more accommodating to this new idea of organizing the DDs. But as we have seen, publishing-wise, the books never made it to the bookstore.

Previous Darshan Diaries had been organized purely around dates. Most of them have no chapter titles; those few that do have very particular titles pertaining to just one of the people who took sannyas that night, not unlike the way chapter titles in Q&A discourse books take their titles from one of that day's questions. Whether titled or not, chapters in all other DDs contain Osho's words from only one date per chapter, though they often have extra features as well, interviews and ashram life articles, but these are clearly secondary, and never included in the CD-ROM.

The CD-ROM version of If You Choose also has occasional notes like "p 195 is missing and interviews with Ma Anand Savita and Ma Prem Divya are not included". This indicates a fair bit of development of the book process, interviews had been conducted, pages numbered, etc. It was not such a mish-mash, there was obvious planning behind it, etc. Such notes are not found for other books in the CD-ROM. Probably they are "production-only" notes, the kind that would disappear before publication. Thus, this may be a snapshot of a book in mid-production, which got derailed at the Ranch, when it was finally decided to give up on all DDs.

Sannyas Dates

Osho's words to new sannyasins for these two months are possibly near-intact in the CD-ROM but their dates are completely unknown and most of the names have been removed.

If there's anything you can add, even if just a single name and date for Mar, please let us know. Still to do are links for the (almost entirely non-existent) name-pages and ch # in the CD-ROM.
